Hi and welcome . Cant help you with the key fob as i`m one of the coupe mob but i`m sure someone will be able to help you as we have quite a few members in south Wales . There may be a solution in the how to section that doesn`t need it to be programmed or just search it on google as it is normally better than the forum search if you haven't done already

The roof down option works provided the battery has enough charge - it might be that causing your issue or you are not doing it right (you have to hold it for a while).
Roof up via the button needs a smartop (or similar).

I am in Newport where are you?
We have a small group of Z3 and Z4 owners in and around South Wales and some members across in Bristol that keep in touch and get together as a Zed Shed Cymru Group when we need jobs doing on our cars. Usually meet up at my home garage as I have a car lift.
Owner supplies parts and between us we do the job, donations towards consumables and tool fund are down to the individual whenever a job is done.
We keep in touch via a Whats App Group which you are invited to join, you will need to send me a text to be added in. I will send you a PM on here with my contact number.
As to your key fob lowering the roof, try holding the unlock button down for a longer time and see if the roof opens. If it dosn't the car may need to have the comfort access file amended using NCS software on a laptop to set the option for roof opening from the fob. I have NCS Expert and could plug your car in to see if it needs the option selecting. This can be done with the Carly system but its quite an expence to get it and there is a subscription to pay to use it. I have Diagnostic software on a laptop and a Creator 310+ handheld scanner should you need to code read your car for faults when dash lights illuminate. The Whats App group is useful for listing any run outs and car shows we attend throughout the year as and when they take place.

As said above you can only lower the roof with the fob unless you have aftermarket additions. It is most likely that the key(s) have low battery charge, especially if you've just bought the car and hasn't been used for a while. The key battery will charge itself as soon as it's in the ignition slot. It may take a good few minutes.
As also said, you have to hold the unlock button on the remote all the time the roof is lowering.

The key locks and opens the car, thats it. I have held the buttons for a while to see if that worked but it didnt. I drove it home for 3 hours so i assumed that would of charged the key, not sure if it doesnt charge while driving though
So I was guessing it was just something I could get done coding it. Was just seeing if someone was local

yes, although its the car battery that might be your issue (although 3 hours would also be good for that unless its a night trip). How old is the battery? Its stamped on the terminal. If its old it might be that the voltage is not enough for the car to allow it. lots of problems occur on this car with an old battery.kingz4 said:

Hi my 23i wouldnt drop the roof from the key fob (all E89s have the ability to do this without additional equipment/installs), luckily another member reprogrammed the car to do this using Carly. As the above have mentioned check your battery age, mine still had its original 2009 battery! Also you might as well change the two roof relays as well (well documented on the forum and only about £16 each)

My roof would not open on the key, charged the battery and no issues since - one common mistake, have you locked the shelf in place in the boot before trying the roof - needs to be in place or it will not move.

At least it a free fix.
You can get Colb to code the roof close function then sorted , I bought the smart top for mine.
Watch the boot shelf and be gentle with it, they are notorious for breaking the two plastic hinges. You cant get replacement hinges and have to replace the whole shelf which is v expensive, but there is a clever fix though with a drill and three bolts if you do break one.
