Hi all. I just picked up my 2003 3.0i roadster on Thursday. Love it - silver with M6s (will post pictures soon).

Have a couple of questions:

1) The previous owner is offering me the hardtop for an additional £500. I know this is good value but would prefer to put the money aside for a rainy day. Is the rag top good enough to get you through the winter (I will treat/seal it properly) or should I bite his arm off?

2) Talking of winter - did you folks struggle last year? Is the Z4 as useless in the snow as every other RWD BM?

Thanks. Looking forward to getting to know you fine people.

Hi Niall

Welcome to the forum....grab the hard top. They go for considerably more than that on here and ebay. So even if you don't want to keep, you could pass it on and recoup some of your Roadster outlay.

I don't have one and don't even think I'd bother if I had the room to store one.

Welcome Niall! I have a silver 03 3.0 which I bought last year. In the snow without winter tyres - abysmal. In any other conditions I've experienced though, it's been great! The ragtop is fine in the winter, no trouble - just look after it. Get the hardtop if you have storage for when you don't need it.

re: the hardtop - If it's silver, in good condition and you really don't want it, I'm local-ish and I'll have it - obviously would send a bit your way for the 'finders fee'! :)

Welcome to the forum. I too would snap up the hardtop. £500 is a steal if it is good nick (a guaranteed profit too if and when you decide to sell in the future)

Thanks for the welcomes and for the advice. I hadn't thought about buying the hardtop as an investment to sell on... will think that over.

Thanks again. Photos soon

welcome and enjoy
PS had two ragtop 3 series, never had a problem in the winter time, other than the tyres spinning endlessly in snow and the cars deciding where they wanted to go on their own :) Been quite a few posts on winter tyres.

I have now taken some photos. A couple of questions first:

1) Having experimented with different lengths of foam I have now removed ALL the foam from the sound generator. To my ears it sounds great - still quiet at low/medium revs but wailing like a Ducati on full throttle. Is there any harm to be done keeping it this way (other than to my ear drums)? Can't see why.

2) How do I tell if my M6s are genuine BMW alloys or replicas. My thinking is all 18"s will be replicas as the M6 has larger wheels?

Anyway - pics: :D

Looks nice mate.

With my last convertible (MR2 roadster) I bought a hardtop and had it on for most of the year, just because I thought it looked much better and would be added protection.

However, I must say I don't think the Z4 roadster looks great with a hardtop on. But for £500 it can only be a good addition for the winter months.

Enjoy
