New member looking for a Z4MR

Hi All,

Recently joined up to gain some more knowledge as I've started looking for a Z4MR to replace my current pride and joy. This will be my first venture into convertible and RWD territory, so what better place to start! As a BMW and ///M newbie are there any helpful guides of what to look for when buying a second hand Z4MR? A few friends have 3l Z4 so I've asked common issues with the hood motors/leaks/etc, suspension, body work and interior, but any further knowledge is always useful?!

Hi and welcome to the Forum - good luck with your search. Link to a buyers guide in my signature which is 'general' for the Zed. For the ///M full service history and the all important first service. Not an ///m owner so no doubt others have better knowledge than me and can advise. :thumbsup:
 
Hi and welcome, can't think of anything in particular specific to the ///M. There are vanos issues but these do seem few and few between. A good history is key though.

Seems you've been doing your research already, which is great. As srhutch says, vanos issues sometimes come up. Also the DSC unit and pump (stability control system) can go, but not common and you'd not know in advance. There are loads of things that can go wrong and cost £ but nothing that the car is really notorious for apart from the hood motor failing and rear springs snapping - though they seem to be a less common problem on the M. The only other thing I can think of is binding brake calipers... Or rather caliper - weirdly, if it happens it seems to be the front near side every single time.

It would be a good idea to listen to a 'healthy' car before you go see some as well - the engine has a unique sound, both at idle and under load, which can worry the hell out of you if you're not expecting it because it's really tappity, especially cold. Sounds like a bag of spanners :lol:

When you drive one you will find the clutch heavier than a standard Z, and the gearbox (1st to 2nd) needs getting used to.

However, it's awesomeness makes any challenging character traits pale into insignificance. Do try to drive the cars on days you can get the roof down. The soundtrack is sublime, and you will be hooked, instantly :thumbsup:

Recent owner of a ///ZMR myself. Stunning car, it will blow you away.

Following on from Bings comments, I had the front discs & pads replaced on mine.

Just short of £700 at a specialist with OEM parts :tumbleweed: (Part & parcel of stopping that immense performance) :D

Worth every single penny of the money I've spent on it, even the cost of the new soft tooth brush for interior detailing :thumbsup:

I;m struggling to decide on colour, even in person. There are some great looking cars around at the moment. Interlagos Blue and a dark silver/grey;

Thanks HalifaxBantam - I buy parts from a trader for my father's R8 and my S3 currently, so will continue to do that and DIY fit - should hopefully bring the costs down a smidge, but well worth the money for that power either way!

My Panzer currently has a hybrid turbo, so the 340+ of the ///M shouldn't be too alien - it's the RWD that I'm really looking forward to!

If anyone could point me to any members' cars for sale, I'd be very appreciative. ForSale threads appear sparse at the moment!

That silver grey one linked looks very nice. And the hard top included is a bonus. Personally I'm a fan of silver grey, though my secret love is imola red :oops:

As already mentioned go test drive a few before you buy. Another thing to check is the clutch diaphram springs offloading when you switch the car off.(there is a small rattle) This is 'normal' I am told and shouldn't happen when you engage the clutch and switch the car off.....(someone with better knowledge then me will come along and correct me if wrong! :poke: )

It might take time Jamie, but it is worth the wait if you end up buying a forum members cherished car.

I was very fortunate when I bought mine, & I keep looking at it in the garage & pinching my self.

At the time I had an open mind on what I wanted, but was fortunate to have the help of a further forum member who was kind enough to let me drive his car whilst I was on holiday :)

His was a 3.0is...lovely car, I was hooked.

Then I saw The ZMR car I eventually bought for sale on the forum. If you get the time, have a look at the posts linked to me relating to the car & the comments of the forum members. Their opinion's & knowledge of the car sealed it for me.

As I say you may have to wait for the right car, but it is worth it :thumbsup:

Habit I have got into is depressing the clutch to switch the engine off, stop this rattle as said above.
