New Member & First Z4

Hi there, reaching out for some advice.

I am looking to purchase my first Z4 that will be driven predominately at weekends only.

Certainly not a mid-life crisis, but need advice on the suitability of an aging Z4's as I have a budget of circa £6k. Given that I will be using the vehicle simply for personal use, the mileage on a used BMW does not worry me, but can people kindly point me in the right direction about any other realistic pitfalls such as racist of replacing or repairing a roof if failure raises its ugly head?

I am hoping to garage the car, space allowing.

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome :)

Mileage and age shouldn't be a problem as long as the zed has a good service history since they tend to be pretty bullet proof. You should be able to pick up a nice 3.0 for 6K! Replacing a roof motor will set you back around the £500 - £600 mark at a local independent BMW specialist or around £1000 at a BMW dealer.

There is good buyers guide her which should also help http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=21281

Good luck and hope you find something soon

Brian has pretty much said it all! Welcome along, you will love it when you get it I'm sure :-)

Most of the well cared for Zeds will already have had the pitfalls addressed such as non run flat tyres fitted, bushes renewed, up-rated interior (heated sports seats), but as you will be purchasing a sports car with excellent performance make certain the brakes are in good condition (if not factor into the costs) and you may be lucky and find a Zed that has already had it's roof motor replaced. Check both window motors are working.

After that a good service record is important -the Zed has surprisingly lengthy service intervals, watch out that an Inspection 2 is not due as this is the more expensive service). Tyres are expensive replacement will cost more if you have a staggered 255 and 225 set though a good replacement set from Goodyear or Falken make it more affordable.
Most owners want wheels that look good so check they don't need a refurb (£380 for a quality job).

At the price point your looking at then there are quite a few pre facelift Zeds. The 3.0i is sought after and if you are patient you should be able to find the colour and most of the specs you prefer in a well cared for Zed. Some people consider the 2.5 as well as there are plenty about. The running costs are not very different.

Keep an eye on the for sale section of the forum and all the best with your search.

Hi and welcome. All good advice already offered.

Glad that you asked about the roof. Shows that you have abundant good taste as you're looking at Roadsters!

Goog luck with your search.

I'm a newbie and purchased my first Z two weeks ago. I can heartily endorse the buyers guide linked in Brian's post. I searched throughout the entire summer and that guide became my bible. I gained confidence with every example I looked at and was soon knowing exactly what to look for and what to reject. It's your money so never be afraid to just walk away. This time of year is perfect financially and you'll be rewarded for your patience. I found the search became really enjoyable, not daunting, and you'll learn so much.

Good luck! :D
