Hi guys! I have just joined the forums today in the build up to me buying my first Z4.

I am waiting to sell my TT, but went to test drive a 3.0i Z4 the other and loved it, this sealed the TTs fate and it's now up for sale.

There are a couple of questions I wanted to ask you lot before I go ahead and buy.

What are the standard issue headlights on a 2004 3.0i or iSE? Do they have angel eyes?

Is there many instances of clutch problems on these cars? TTs have a pretty high failure rate it seems and I am keen to get away from this!

I am sure more will pop in to my head and I am hoping to take advantage of the expertise on here! Cheers in advance for your help.

Thanks guys! Hoping to be on these boards quite often once I get the Z4, but not with problems I hope

Hoping to get plenty of info from the guys on here and a bit of banter along the way would be great too!

Hello and welcome,

angel eyes were introduced after the 2006 facelift, but anyway, they are quite dim and the effect is marginal.

No clutch issues, and if something does break down, you can buy a cheaper LUK replacement (they made the original OEM part).

Is it a common mod for people to add angel eyes to the earlier ones? I really like the look of them and if I could get my hands on a nice set of Xenon angel eyes for it, I would probably fit them.

The real concern I have with buying the Z is the whole roof motor thing and the poor drainage. It seems to be quite common for these to fail, and I know a lot of normal car owners won't pay enough attention to stuff like this.

Hi and welcome to the Forum. There is a pre purchase checklist in my signature which you may find of use and which covers most of the issues. Good luck

Thanks Alan, great checklist. I will keep an eye out for the Z4 specific stuff, I am ok with all the general stuff.

The tamper spot on the mileage clock is an interesting one! Will definitely have to keep an eye out for it.

Did any of the pre-facelift Z4s come with heated seats? It's a luxury I rather like in the TT, would be sad to lose it.

Also, are there any reported issues with the timing chains? I know the engines in these 3.0 Zs is talked about as one of the best mass produced engines of the last 15 years, so I am guessing not.

Ideally I would buy my car off a forum member that has really cared for the car, will post a wanted add, when the time is right.

The best solution for the roof is buy a coupe! :poke:

Welcome to the forum....

Don't listen to the coupe crew, a roadster is the right choice.

If you get a zed that's had the roof motor repaired already, that should put your mind at rest. Angel Eyes have been covered in depth HERE.

Haven't heard of any clutch issues, remember the zed shares its clutch with the 330i - and the zed is lighter, so in theory the clutch will last longer

I'd be very surprised if anyone has had timing chain issues. At worst, you may need to service the tensioner at some point. Z4s are a bit young to have timing chain issues yet. You could enquire with Z3 owners or E46 3 series that have double VANOS, 1998 and later. Even that old, I'd be surprised if many have had any issues.

Also worth removing the CDV (clutch delay valve) to enable smoother gear changes and prolong clutch life.

If you can get xenons you won't regret it, halogens are crap, really crap.
