Got my new 35is last week and after 3yrs with my23i with the base hi fi, I specced the Advanced Loudspeaker system (mid priced one ) on the new car, so glad I did I'm certainly no audiophile but even to my untrained ear the new system is miles better.
+1 :)

I went full blown nutter system - Had too many shite OEM stereos in the past and reports on the z4's std install weren't great.

Very happy with it :)

Having just lived with the standard speaker setup for over 3 years I know it's already excellent. I don't have to guess from a brochure or believe any hype from the internet, in fact it's surprisingly good and had to double check when I sold the car exactly what was fitted to it (with my BMW dealer). My experience with Z's is that they are small cars with a small space / volume of air to move around, therefore it doesn't really need so many extra speakers / subs. It's also worth noting that these items are heavy and you are going to have to carry them around every mile you drive.

Another point is that it appears from BMW's description that simply more speakers and subs are added. There's no reference to improving the quality of what's driving them (head unit / amps).

My only slight temptation to upgrade is that once I purchased a Z3 M Roadster (one of the first in the UK) from new and kept it for 5 years. This could be another such car I keep for a long time and in which case the extra expense becomes more worthwhile. I think you need to enjoy every penny of this extra as when you sell it will add nothing to the value, although potentially it might be slightly more desireable.

What comes after the E89 now its nearing the end of its life?

I don't believe the general public really know yet. This leads to a suspicion that there's no direct replacement on the horizon because we'd have seen it in testing by now.

I suspect that there might be a substantial change in the future.

That's the same colour as ours. Went slightly mad on the options but same interior. Guarantee you'll like it.

Thanks Gavin. Do you mean I went slightly mad on the options or you did ? :)

AndyJ I would still add the upgraded hi Fi if you can, the two subs behind the seat make such a big difference to the Bass line, it really is very good.

Regret is the worse thing to feel, and for a few hundred quid it's well worth it.

Just my opinion

Whilst I agree fully with the above 2 posts there also has to be a line where you stop making BMW richer and the car heavier because you can.... My reservation comes from a few areas.

  • ive owned the normal system for 3 years and it was great
Does the improved system take up space I could otherwise use ?
    It adds significant weight

Ideally I should demo it side by side with the normal version, but that's very hard to do.

These cars aren't really the right place to evaluate sound systems are they?
Top down there's wind noise. Top up,they aren't exactly the quietest of cabin spaces!

I'm with you to a certain extent that's why I didn't opt for the satnav ( Bloody expensive and crap imo ) I also had the basic set up on my 23i and
there is a noticeable improvement :)

AndyJ I've been on this site and the American Z4 post site for 4yrs or more and your probably the first person I've ever heard give a thumbs up to the standard sound system, even if your not bothered about the sound quality, the lack of volume at speed with the roof down is pathetic.

When I'm moving quickly with the roof down the last thing Im bothered about is the hifi. In fact if the roof is down the tunes are very rarely on loud, just basic respect for others, especially when listening to Steel Panther :D

With the roof up its pretty good.

Nice spec.

I have that colour on my 20i, love it! Strangely enough though, it shows up dirt more than my previous Alpine White E89 :o

Hi Doc,

Did you choose the Orange or Black roof ? Black or Orange world interior ? Any pictures ?

Glad to hear that you are enjoying it and with no regrets. It's a brave colour to order, but I love something that's a bit different and rarer. So far all the VO Z4's I've seen (not many) have been pretty dirty, so when I pick mine up it may be the first one I see with my Spec that's actually clean :)

I went for the orange roof and orange interior.

I was lucky with mine, there was one rolling off the production line in the exact spec that I wanted. I was driving it 2 weeks later!

Looks stunning Dr ! Making me think 3 months is longer to wait than first anticipated....

I had to wait 3 months as well, but love the orange!

My wife was initially a bit skeptical about the colour but now really likes it as well :D

The 3 month wait is to be honest, self imposed. BMW could have the car ready in January, but I hardly use the car during winter and if it snows it would stay in the garage. So I'm choosing to wait until March 1st and the 15 plates.
