Bizarre feeling saying this, as I have never really liked how the MX5 looks... But that's a pretty good looking car for a wee chuckable toy

You tempted to get one for running round the garden Kryton :P

 heck no, just thought it might have been some interest to others, never been a fan of Mazda's :)

Likewise I like the look of it more than I'd have expected, but it does remind me of the smart roadster a little which is not a good thing :headbang:

This is a good point, I am sure it is a the 'racy' launch livery that is the problem though. A different paint job and it would look a lot better

So that's the mk3 with a body kit and some tuning.

I thought it was going to be this new one that they are developing with Alfa.

I really don't like MX5' s they could put a jet engine under the bonnet & I still wouldn't be interested! I can never understand how a car can be called a sports car when it has never had enough power to pull the skin off a rice pudding...I just don't get it.

I had a old boy in a MX5 the other week try to smoke me at the lights in his MX5 & it just sums up the drivers nicely all mouth no trousers, I was surprised that he thought his hairdryer engine would be capable of smoking anything!

Sorry rant over :D

Your partially right, a stock mx5 is nothing to write home about, but they are hugely tuneable...
I had a 1.6 mk1 with 90bhp as standard, strapped on a greddy turbo and intercooler with little fuss and got it dynoed at around 220bhp - a right pocket rocket.. Ran it that way for years with no issues and cause I kept it in sleeper mode I embarrassed a lot of fancier machines thinking they could burn me...

A friend had the 1.8 model with around 145bhp as standard, he did the same as me and had the power up to over 300bhp.

Also with a fully adjustable suspension with the right setup they can handle well too...

Great car the MX5. . .

Affordable fun and revs to 7000rpm (those last few 700 revs very handy), fantastic gearbox, great steering and ride, very chuckable and manageable running costs. Reliable!

Try one for a time - they can be bought very cheaply - mine always put a smile on my face - I loved using all the performance and before the Zed it was my introduction to open top motoring.

Loved my mk 2 all subtle curves and in British Racing Green (!) I could jump in every day, chuck the roof back and carve through the traffic - wonderful. ALWAYS got back home with a smile on my face saying 'I love that car!'

I heard the engine came originally from the Mazda 323 design which was going to be turbo charged and therefore was made very strong - not surprised it could be tuned heavily. I tried a 2 litre modern version but felt the more powerful engine spoilt the feel of the car and went for the Zed instead - and that's from a man that loved the power in our TVR Chimaera and the acceleration in our Superbikes (nothing to touch that in terms of excitement).

Still bought a Zed as a replacement though. . .

:driving:

I'm thinking this might be my next little project starting from the earlier, more powerful mk1 1.6 engine.

My wife had a Mk2 1.6 which I never liked, a Mk2.5 1.8 which was great and my old man had an imported Mk1 1.8 which was simply amazing.

The offer reliability, fun and driver involvement that can't really be matched at the price. They also manage to do all this at speeds which don't threaten your life or your licence (unless you bolt a turbo on)

I'd start with the mk1 1.8.
They have uprated brakes from the 1.6 (which you will need...) and a stronger diff.
Also some of the 1.8's came with limited slip diff's as standard, saving you the hassle of swapping them afterwards.
The 1.8 also has bigger injectors so its better able to cope with the extra fuelling requirements post turbo.

I think that might be incompatible with the eventual plan of sticking the engine in a Westfield. They have been done but i believe the Westfield kit was designed around the 1.6 engine. All pie in the sky at the moment anyway. I should really finish a project before i go looking at what's next.
