New M6 Coupe & Cabriolet

I am quite liking the coupe, not sure about the look of the cabriolet, love the steering wheel, vented style M kidneys, and the gold M branded brake calipers, however the price tag is eye-watering :

Okay, if I had £93,000, yes really £93,000 why would I buy this over a 911.....stupid :headbang:

In my own mind it seems that Audi have their high performance coupes spot on, take the RS5, its £58,000 takes slightly longer to get to 60 (0.2 seconds) and it probably doesn't drive as well, but then we are looking at a GT cruiser not a point to point specialist, so can the M6 really demand an extra £35k.

M5 is £20k cheaper. I can buy a very good second-hand Ferrari F430/Audi R8 (both mid-engined :D ) for £93k.

Buy it, keep it 6 months, and lose £20K...why would you not want to do that? Buy the new 911......

Interesting, isn't it ? The car is gorgeous, but the price is so far out of the ballpark it's baffling. I'd love to see their analysis around where it places in the market - though the Merc CLS 500 or AMG must be close to this price, no ?

You're right Bing. 10 other better cars out there, for £100K

911, R8, Maserati, New SL, M5, Vantage etc

The RS5 is rubbish though. The M3 is a far more accomplished car and would be a better comparison.

Hold on a minute ! Let's see a few road tests before we write it off as inferior. The R8 is no good if you need more than two seats, want some proper performance and is soon to be replaced. My Z4MC is virtually on a par with the V8 version performance wise so not much extra thrills for your £100k outlay. The new SL is also only two seats and you were rubbishing the Vantage on an earlier thread !!

Granted the £93k is way, wayyyy too much money but then again the new 911 is also wayyyyy too expensive too. I don't know what planet car makers are on with pricing at the moment. You would've thought that BMW had looked at the residuals of the previous M6 and heeded the concerns of the irate owners who lost £000's in the space of a few months. Obviously not.

I've been on the wrong end of a 650 Convertible and I'm sure residuals are no better on the new M6. The Vantage isn't a great car, but if I base my thoughts on it compared to what physical money I would lose, then a Vantage would be a better car.

I know Bentley do a fast 4 seater, I maybe think, and maybe just me, that a two seater sports, maybe an extreme sports like an M is a better option, not perhaps in M3 or M5 incarnation, but in a 6, it's hard to see what it's trying to achieve. Is it a GT car without the pedigree some would expect close to £100K?

Mercedes have no pedigree perhaps, sweeping statement I know, but their work on SLS, SLR lends them more credibility on a car of high cost maybe more than BMW....

One reason I sold the 650, is because I thought it was a very big sports car, and I perhaps didn't think the size was a good thing for such a car. Almost more so in an M6....

Yes I'm going on, sorry!

Now if we are debating the point of the M6 then I'm inclined to agree with you (at that price). If it were £75k then it is a lot more compelling. There was a recent article in the motoring press about how M division really wanted to make a supercar (a la the R8 and SLS) but BMW were reluctant because they didn't think it would make a profit.

I think that is a short-sighted approach. The 'halo effect' of such a model can have benefits right throughout the range and how good could a proper M division supercar be with all the usual constraints removed?

Thats quite a statement, I have not read a poor review of the RS5, but having never driven one, I cannot actually say one way or the other.

Isn't some of this missing the point? This is a special class of powerful 4 seater coupe and roadster. Comparing to 911, R8's, vantages is not what this is about. M5, etc. are just saloons with big performance. This is up against Bentley, etc.

Secondly this car isn't really for the UK. It'll be found on the boulevards of California and will sell well there...

Would I pay that much for it - no way

I've not read a good one yet. Evo long term review was pretty negative, as were most of the road tests and every comparison I saw with an M3 it's lost. General consensus = dull and un-involving.

EDIT : Re the RS5 - i should qualify my statement as referring to its ability to satisfy keen drivers rather than its overall day to day quality.

Would never buy an M3 just because of the example the drivers set. S5 hasnt been ruined by that for me .. yet.

Do you really think that is still the case? I'd agree when the E46 came out but I thought the E92 didn't carry the same negative image?

Possibly not, I havnt seen too many of them, but been cut up by a fair few E92 335's petrol and diesel and even some arrogant 320s! (as happened today)

Unfortunately I still affiliate them together.
