new m4 major ouch!!!

That makes me feel sick, we all do some silly stuff and he just got caught out. I know how I feel when I kerb an allow, then that short drive before you can pull over and check the damage always makes me feel sick, just imagine what he went through.

I never understood why BMW puts the DSC disable functionality in that easy reach via simply pressing the mode button repeatedly. It should always be a separate button so that people don't go "I WANTZ MOAR SPOARTZ TODAY, AND MORE [KABOOM]"

On the zed going into sport + doesn't disable the dsc totally, you have to go into the menu system to do that if I recall correctly for that very reason you state

Watching That you tube clip made me properly cringe,I know he must feel like a right plonka :idunno: i'd be totally gutted I reckon he has some serious expense coming his way , I think those M4 coupes are stunners to look at especially the soft top versions in Yas blue with pale leather interior , I would'nt drive mine like that though,my wife takes the micky out of me cos crawl along in our Z4, with the roof down of course , :happyclap:
 
For me it was inexperience...not that I am a driving god or anything for sure...but In a V8 M3 that wouldn't have ever happened anyway because its a miracle if you can light the tyres up in that at low revs! :poke: :D blame the low down torque of the new model!

When I saw the vid earlier on pistonheads I was really gutted for the driver because he proper belted that kerb and it looked like it had done some damage but beemers are pretty solid so hopefully it isn't too bad.

As Bradders/Maniac said its worth having some fun in an empty car park or similar and that is what I did a few years ago to get a feel for RWD...but still I have messed it up the odd time and only just got away with it when I have been showing off in the heat of the moment. :oops:

His comment&explanation on bimmerpost is hilarious....

He says he's used to high powered cars and that he graduated ' formula racing school' and more or less blames the difference in tyre pressue (1,5psi, so 0,1bar; almost negleable).
typical american that lies and exaggerates everything he can think of.... But he certainly doesn't blame himself....
when you're thàt experienced, you know you have to be on your qui-vive when accelerating without dsc etc with so much power. Nope, beaten by the 0,1bar....

Although he says that he won't be turning off the dsc, and that the car still drives fine (that is his impression :rofl: )

was reading the bimmerpost thread where the owner claimed to not be showing off and it to be just a mistake, not sure I buy it!

if you pause it, you can see a) the front left is slammed against the asphalt on landing and b) something is hanging off underneath on the right.. deffo a bit of damage

Probably underside scratched, underside plating/subframes dented/bent whatever, tyres now unreliable, rims maybe weakened.
All sorts of risks with these stunts. Maybe not the car to buy 2nd hand in a few years :lol:

The guy just should have said that he was showing of and got totally caught by surprise and that he'ss definately not the driver he thought he was. (just take the blame like a man... instead of seeking excuses in a 'maybe 0,1bar tyre pressure difference...')
Well, just wat the editors at jalopnik said really (and the comments).
But his reaction imho typifies the attitude of a lot of Americans (not all obviously, but this is what I often see hear&read). Not able to take the blame and look into ones own (and thus learning from it). There is no humbleness (or modesty or how you want to call it).
 
Now call me stupid here, but I'm about three weeks into M-car ownership and I know full well what will happen if I put my boot down in the thing in either 1st, or 2nd. Conditions in that video look pretty good but I would say one of two things happened:

1) He put his foot down trying to show off, got it biblically wrong and didn't have the reaction speed/experience/knowledge (delete as appropriate) to sort it out in time

2) He is an actual proper wally and had no idea what the combination of heavy right foot, DSC off and more torque than a Ferrari F50 has at peak, but at 1850rpm would do

Of course we all know the answer to this is no.1, but he seems to be making himself out to be utterly blameless and implying the machine was at fault! I don't think anyone would have given him half the stick if he'd put his hands up and said "what a twat I was".

We've probably all had "oh dear, I didn't think it would do THAT" moments but most of us are lucky to not be spread across the internet. Blaming it on slightly under-inflated tyres, not something a pro would do I think.

Ironically by him not reacting and trying to balance the steering may have saved the car from more damage, as at least he hit the kerbs straight on. Any angle either way and that may well have flipped the car.

I would say lucky guy, if not a little flustered! :oops:

He claims he intentionally hit it head on. i'd believe him if I hadn't seen the ten seconds leading up to that...

That accident definitely had DSC and probably DTC off. This is precisely what these systems prevent.

There always is the difference between DSC (stability control) and DTC (traction control). The mode button only turns off the former, and as you say probably not all that much either. The M4 might do more when just pushing the mode button again and again.

I don't have idrive so I wonder whether I am supposed to control all those settings. But I picked up on this forum that a UK Z4 might have a bit more in the way of dynamic driving gear than my US for-wimps vehicle.
 
I think we have all nearly had bad misses or accidents....ok granted not as bad as his, but we have all come close at some point. I know I have. I remember once driving behind someone on a meet thru a forest on a damp October day. We must have been doing 70.... And on one turn I accelerated out of it, and my back end kicked out and I nearly went down a hill......

I've seen forum drivers pull out of a junction in a Z, and spin their backs, and spin the cars 360 degrees, if a car was coming down the road, well, it's something that you could look back on and think.....jeez.
