New LCM

I have a 2004 2.2 e85. I have read lots of threads about LCM coding and many imply that apart from the tamper dot issue, if I replace what I believe is a faulty unit with a good one (exact same part number but off a 2.5l petrol X3) is it simply a old part out new part in? ie it will not stop the car from starting and I can recode the VIN and mileage in the LCM at a later date?

I have some other issues (starting problem and potential DME issue - 2869 - DME self test RAM check faulty) that have developed since the LCM issue arose and I want to be confident (as one can be) it’s not the LCM.

Thanks in advance.

Correct

Your ram issue may be the DME starting to fail module wise and it may be prudent to find a new one- that will need the ews disabling however to allow the car to start

Hi Bigwinn.

I have an issue with my 2005 z4 2.0i. I swap out the lcm for a used one of eBay and I now have the airbag light on the dash. Put the old lcm back in but the light is still on. I have C110+ code scanner but the light won't clear. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

That’s the second time I’ve heard that in a week ironically

What airbag code is showing from your obd reader?

The chassis number is also stored in the LCM as well as the instrument cluster. If you haven't updated that to match your car, that would be the first thing I'd address.

You also probably have the 'tamper dot' in the dials, next to the milage too. You can use PA Soft or 'BMW Standard Tools' (NCS, INPA etc.) to update the chassis number. Both options are on eBay for about £20, and there's numerous guides online (it should be the same process as the much more common E46, but don't take me 100% on that last part).

That could well be it!
When the ignition is switched on it does a confidence check of the airbag system. That code is telling you the centre module doesn’t like the VIN.
When I code in a new module I have to select either the instrument cluster or the LCM to pick up the car details, including VIN.
I am on dodgy ground here, but maybe, depending how it has been installed from new, some airbag modules check the instrument cluster and some check the LCM?? Hence why you don’t always get the airbag light?

Thinking back though, the two LCMs I’ve changed have both been facelift cars, which have a different airbag control system, so maybe on prefacelift it is more important to get the correct VIN into the LCM.

Don’t forget you need to update the odometer as well. I struggled for ages until I realised it needed it in kilometres. Scanner 1.4 can do the coding of it.

Ok, this is great. Thank you. I have ordered the software from eBay. 30 quid. I saved a few videos on YouTube to use the p.a softs. Software.

I'll try to update the LCM to match the car info. This should be interesting.

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again.

Ok so got rid of the tamper dot. Matched the mileage and Vin to the new LCM. Still throwing up this fault. I can clear it but the airbag light remains on and the fault code appears again.

Good progress!

Have you cleared the faults from the airbag ECU itself? (I think it's the ABG module, but don't remember 100%)

I wouldn't be surprised if clearing if from the airbag ECU will remove the fault from the dashboard module too

Facelift is ABG
Prefacelift will be SIM85, plus SBSL and SBSR.
Need to check and clear all of those.

The clearing, yes.

Just find the relevant modules and enter them, and remove the codes, same as you did for the IKE (cluster) in your print screen.

If you don't know which it is, there is no harm in trying them all. I think it also has an 'auto can't feature, where it'll try every module and show you the errors in each one.

(Unless enuff_zed tells us that the software can't do that for prefacelifts, as it can't see the modules...)

If you do a full system scan it should show you all faults. Then you look at the airbag section which I think Scanner 1.4 refers to as SRS? Clear any codes in that.
However, if you do have an airbag module issue where it isn’t communicating then Scanner doesn’t tell you it can’t see it, just says there are no codes.
If you have no airbag SRS codes but the lamp is on then you need to use Creator, Autophix, or INPA which will actually tell you which module it can’t see.

Thanks enuff_zed. I'll look into this.

I think this is the first time I've had this car with no dash lights. MOT this Friday.
