New LCD screen for nav - anyone?

Hi Everyone

I'm looking to replace the LCD screen in the flip up display for my nav. The current LCD is getting weak and is a bit dim until it's warmed up to about 20c, so when I get in the car at 10c it can take 20-30 mins to get bright enough to really use.

I know I could just splash out and buy a whole new unit but I'd rather just replace the LCD screen inside the housing. I've seen documentation on how to open up the housing etc but I need the screen itself.

Anyone have one or know what model it is? I have a feeling someone said it was made by Sharp?

Even any pics of one someone might have may be helpful

Thanks

Have you done the same on yours or is that unit in good working order and spare? :P

to be honest, I've no idea if it works or not. I bought the unit from a scrapyard and never bothered to check anything other than the motor
Considering your location, I'm more than happy to pop over and give you it and the rest of the internals I have laying about for it in exchange for a few beer tokens

I've no need, as I've switched mine out for a fully integrated android tablet (which, tbh, is definately cooler than the original :P)

that would be fantastic - thanks. Might be worth me trying before I splash out on a new screen. They seem to be available for about the 75 quid mark new.

How did you find opening the unit up? I don't suppose you took photos during the disassembly did you?

I'm happy to come and pick up to save you the hassle - we regularly pop to Nottingham on a Friday night anyway if that suits at all?

Pop me a PM if you like

It's no hassle - I'm in Keyworth, so it's only a 10 minute hike south ;)

Opening the unit is fairly straightforward.
I didn't take any pictures I don't think, but I'm sure there's a guide here I followed.

However, it's a case of removing about 7 screws, two of which are pretty well hidden behind cables.
Once they're out, you can seperate the two halves of the bottom (the tray).
With these seperated, you can then open the monitor housing; the top is held onto the bottom by four clips that are accessible via the airvents in the bottom of the clamshell (which are now accessible due to seperating the two halves of the tray)
Pop all four clips, then you can slowly prise the top half off the bottom half.

With the top removed, you should see a blue plastic retaining clip on the left side of the screen - it holds the screen onto the motor arm. pop that off and out.
next, the right side is held in by a plastic grommet on the outside of the bottom tray. If you look at this closely, you'll see a small plastic clip sticking out over the grommet, holding it in place, simply bend that bit back out of the way and prise the grommet off (don't worry, it's intended to be prised).

Now you should be able to remove the screen - although you may first need remove an additional three screws from the motor housing and take that off first to do so. sometimes you can, sometimes you cant :)

Marvellous - sounds like a job for the weekend!

I successfully installed a new DVD laser in my nav unit so I can't see this being too much more difficult.

I'll drop you a PM so we can arrange etc

For disassembly, have a look at module 3, here; http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=56746

Also - I still have an LCD somewhere, so if SK93's doesn't work, send me a PM and I'll see if I can find it. I seem to recall it suffered with similar dim-ness though, so not sure if it will be any improvement? But you're welcome to it, if it's of any use.

All the best,

Dan

*EDIT* - there is also a post on page 2 showing a minor difference in the screen that SK93 dismantled.

Wow thanks chaps - perfect information

Don't worry about the screen Dan - if the first trial one doesn't work out ok then i'll just buy a new screen so it will be known-good.

The photos help a lot too
