As part of my restoration I decided to ATTEMPT to get both keys restored.........little did I know it was going g to be such a performance. Opened up key, careful removed internals fitted into new ebay supplied diamond shells, just needed to be them cut......fat chance, so far can't find anyone to cut the key, found people who cut keys but won't cut a BMW key.......so of to BMW SYTNER SWANSEA.....£187 per key plus it might need a £80 reprogramming charge, so 2 keys might cost over £500......is someone having a laugh or what.
Can anyone suggest what I could try to escape being ripped out please? :|

High street shops usually won't touch them as the poor quality steel that ebay key blades are made from might damage their machines.

Sytners price is about the going rate for totally new keys.

Try a specialist auto locksmith?

Go to these people, Tom. Tried and tested (and trusted). Plus they do an amazing postal service if you can't get to the North Circular.

I had used aliexpress service, where you send a picture of the blade, and they ship you a cut key. Casing is not to original quality, but since i needed a spare one, that worked out for me. Mind you, I had key programing stuff (AK90) allready.

That a great second alternative, thank you.
What's the protocol, how does it work? Do you send them a spare key to copy?

Don't think it matters. Whichever key works, they can clone for you. With The Master Locksmith, always worth dropping them an email with all questions (they come back fast to you).

I've got two keys, so decided to keep hold of one, and post off the other one. Still need to get around to sending the other one off, but will at some point.

Didn't feel brave enough to post them both at the same time!

Was nice and quick, I think I had a new key back within 2/3 days

I split mine and replaced the battery, but it still had one of the functions that were not working. May look in the USA or send a key over there!
Good too know! :D

Seems I might have a similar issue.

One of my keys has decided that locking the car is no longer in its job description. It unlocks ok and after a long drive (charge?) it will lock the car but that doesn’t last long, so I assume I need a new battery.

Is this doable or am I better off just sucking it up and getting a new one?

Sounds about right to be fair - I had to replace and recode a key on my previous Boxster and that was well over £400 for one key!!! did have a nice coffee and shortbread at the Porsche dealer though whilst waiting for the recode though!!!

That has a good chance to be a failing relay in your GM5 module not your key. The GM5 can be swapped for testing purposes without coding. That way you haven't paid for a key that cant be reversed.

You might have the same issue I have. I believe it was that same problem it wouldn't lock the doors, but would unlock. They have two different batteries, one that had the correct orientation and clip and one that does not. Let me know if you want me to send a link with the correct type battery.

Thanks guys.

I’ll look in to the GM5, though given that one key works for all functions and the other only for unlock (I have taken both keys with me several times so have tried them back to back) would that not suggest it’s the key?

I’m not at all clued up on the electrics/GM5 side of things but is there a way to test it? Parts out here are overpriced generally, so I’d be happy to fiddle about before spending.

Just seen your post 3gGT01- that link would be great, thanks
