New key cost, and slow roof.

Hi think this is the correct place to post.

Been looking for a Z4 3.0, only looking at the bottom end of the market for my first soft top. A few things they seem to be missing.

Cost of a new key.

Slow roof motor, so cost of new motor.

If anyone can help

Cheers 🤔

slow roof may be because of lack of lubricant. if the roof makes noise going up and down it needs lubeing.
cost of new key: if you have a existing key the dealer can clone it.

i don't know where you live, but the Dunedin BMW dealer charges $75 an hour same as pitstop or oil changers.

there is no motor: it is a hydraulic pump. shops in the UK charge about 300 pounds to rebuild the pump. factory replacement runs about 700.

it should take about 40 seconds. seems a lifetime in real life. lubing the hinges with lithium grease will speed it up. the hydraulic pump is in the trunk. make sure there is no water damage. also posting year and engine i can sort it out further.

The roof is hydraulic, so a hydraulic pump powered by an electric motor. Best bet is getting it relocated and topped up for fluid. It may not need it... but until you check you could be guessing forever. This will tell you if your problem is the motor, the fluid, or something else (more complicated).

I’d recommend RBM in Hook, Hampshire if you’re anywhere near it. I travel 2 hours (approx) one way! Top bloke! Plenty of feedback if you look at other posts :)

There used to be a forum member in Cheshire who did all sorts if work on Z4s including roof motors, but he is no longer welcome here due to some transactions that went badly wrong.

Before all that kicked off I got rear brake pipes on my previous Z4 replaced in Kunifer in 2017 for £100 and a new flip-style key cut and coded for £80. Very happy with the work done and the price!

I think he is on FB if you search for Zed and Shed but it's your call.

My current car only came with one key. I used a guy in East London BM Keys in Barking. The guy's amazing. He cut and coded a key for me within 15mins from start to finish. I'm still using it 3 years later. He'd be the only person I'd trust to cut keys and code them to my car.

Local quote from my dealer was £172 for a remote fob or £46 for a wallet key. If its just as a spare in case you lock yours keys in the wallet key would do.

A fresh motor, pump and valve block should have the roof opening in around 8 seconds.
The pump is self priming so as long as you can see fluid in the resevoir that should be OK.
Second hand motors start around £70 or a new full unit (motor and pump) around £250
