In the smoothness and 'willingness' of the engine. A clear improvement in performance.

(Hesitation in cold start-up was the first symptom that 2 were failing.)

Hesitation on start up can also be a sign of the HPFP failing. Glance at your fuel rail pressure on start-up when you get a chance.
