New guy seriously thinking about a 35is...

Hey guys, just thought i'd pop in and say hi. I'm currently running around in a 2009 Audi TT coupe (3.2) and I fancy a bit of a change as it isn't the most exciting of chariots. I had a Honda S2000 before and I want something that will combine the best of the audi and honda... well made and slightly more grown up, but with the ability to thrill and get those hairs standing up on the back of me neck! :D

Which is where the 35is comes in... I hope. I've done a bit of research and it seems a bit of a rare beast, and prices still seem quite high on them (£31k for a 2010 car at BMW dealers!). I was wondering how the 35is is regarded in the z4 community...? Is it 'worth' the extra over the 35i? The extra power and DCT do attract me to the 35is, but I'm not sure if it would be noticeable in the real world? I also see that the DCT is operated by buttons and not paddles...? Not sure whether that is very intuitive and may take some of the fun away. I'm quite open on spec and colour, but would prefer an M Sport as it does beef the standard bumpers up a bit.

Ciao for now... :driving:

Boiling this down, I'd say the usual, try both and decide what you want to pay. The 35is is a great car, but its 30K on average second hand, the 35i isn't that much slower and you can get those for around 20K now. Is the extra 10K worth it to you?

I recently traded in my jan 2011 35is and the dealer had it up for 31k and it went within 3 weeks (is watching your old car like stalking :D ) yes it is a great car (but I suppose im biased) , I think it is noticeable but being honest you dont often get the chance to exploit it , as Maniac has suggested try both

Thanks for the initial views. Yep, I think it's just a case of finding a dealer close by who has the cars in stock to test drive. The 35i does seem like better value, but it's just a case of finding an M Sport one in a decent colour. All of the one's around £20k seem to be lower spec cars. I'll keep a look out and report back if I get one! Cheers

this is about as good a deal as you will get at the moment for a 35i

or you could go for a high spec, non m-sport and upgrade the bumpers which shouldnt cost too much to do

The really is a good suggestion - I am sure so many people don't realise how easy it is to change things like bumpers. eBay is littered with e89 M Sport bumpers

Whatever you do, make sure you don't regret your decision. Not a day goes by where I don't regret getting the 30i over the 35i. So I would go with the 35is. The overboost and added horsepower shouldn't be taken lightly.

I've got a test drive booked with a 35is tomorrow, so I'll report back with my views. The one in the link above looks interesting, but not sure if the white is too 'pimpin' for me? Also, are those black gloss alloys an optional BMW extra, or has the guy had them refurbished in that colour?

Just do one thing... warm the car up before giving it the beans... because if you think its fast when its cold.... when its warmed up the ECU lets rip.
