Well done! I did a 3rd viewing of this house I'm still trying to buy (yawn)..this time with the Zed..reversed her into garage gingerly, yay she fits! Didn't attempt getting out. Looks similar to yours size wise. I may have to get some sponge etc on the walls. The Estate agent watched on then told me I should get a special door built to exit the car straight into the house. Hmm

I'd get a roll in shelf for the car. Park on the shelf and have it motor in. No door dings for you!

In all seriousness, that looks pretty slim for a garage :o

I can't believe PVR didn't have a pop about the fact your car needs a damned good wash Andy :poke: :D

When I was going to redesign the interior of my garage to get my car into it in the first place I looked up the measurements. I assume that the cars are the same dimensions across the range (e85/86), though the coupe may be a bit taller :

Width - 1.78m
Length - 4.1m
Height - 1.3m

I have an unusually large garage as it was built as an extension by the previous owner, but the door is 2.13m wide, I have 36cm more width on the left hand side beyond the door and 64cm more width than the door on the right and it is 6.2m long. Even with sink, washing machine, tumble dryer at the end, and all the crap that is still in the garage but shoved to the sides, driving in nose first I can comfortably open the driver's door to the first position that it 'holds' at, and I can get in and out the passenger side with the roof or window down. Because of all the stuff in there the space is more restricted than it sounds but I can still get all around the car if I am careful.

I have no idea if that helps or not :?

Thinking of moving house at the moment.... What size garage (length and width) should I be looking for?

The biggest one you can afford.

The last time we moved house my wife got really fed up with me dismissing so many houses by looking at the garage before I even looked at the house.

It' a bloody joke that developers build garages as small as that one Andy has. It;s the reason insurance premiums are more expensive for garaged cars than they are for car parked on the drive. An accident getting in and out of that tight space is inevitable.

Developers will usually build single garages larger than 90"(2.300) wide, however many of these smaller garages, such as I suspect with Andy's one, are built at a later date on existing semi-detached dwellings in the vacant space to the side. I did the same on a house I owned in the early 70's and sometimes they just aren't big enough for modern cars particularly when many folk want to store other household stuff.

There was a thing on Watchdog a while ago highlighting the fact that most developers were building single garages that are too small for cars. Well they were big enough for cars but you couldn't open the doors to get out once you were in. I remember the clip showed some fat idiot crawling out the boot of a Vauxhall Zafira.

General design sizes for single garages are as follows:-

Minimum width (to get out of car) 2.400 for average car size 4.000 x 1.600 with minimum clear opening for door 1.981 (6' 6") wide

Minimum width 2.850 (to allow for most doors to open fully) for family saloon size 4.500 x 1.700 with minimum clear opening for door 2.134 (7' 0") wide

Ok I'm a big bugger... So I need to be able to get the z4 (e89) in the garage and door fully open. How wide do I need to do this..... If no one know I'll go find a tape a and measure it later.....

Slightly off topic, but when I asked Direct Line about this at renewal time they said it would make no difference to my premium having it listed as garaged. No benefit, but no penalty as others seem to have experienced...

Personally, I would looking at a minimum width of 3.000 (9' 10") taking into account the wing mirrors. If the garage has attached support piers then any measurement should be taken at the narrowest point.

I'd assume you said it would be stored outside so it would be covered if stored inside or outside? Interested to know if you then put it in garage would it be insured..... What if you want to mix and match where you store it?
