Hello all,

Thought I'd introduce myself before I start posting or asking questions! :)

Just picked up a 2004 2.2 Z4 in Grey. 2 small scratches I seek to get sorted this week and the car has the dreaded notchy steering with dash warning light for the steering is on. Time to go through the list of possible fixes (recommendations?) bedore taking the plunge for a new rack (suppliers?)

Thought I'd say hello anyway!

Hi Colin - there's a possible fix involving drilling a hole to lube the lower column. Think it's in the E85/86 problems section.

Thanks for the welcome folks.

I was we'll aware of the problems before purchase. I literally couldn't turn the car down.

Hello and welcome!

Sticky steering is the column and not the rack. The symptoms are almost as if the power steering has gone to sleep and then wakes up as you put pressure on.

If it's notchy maybe you have a different issue. I hope so as a column is feckin' expensive. As Adam said, some people having some luck with adding the grease nipple.

Not got any help on the steering issues but I'm sure it is somewhere in the forum data banks :wink:
 
I hope I have found a possible fix for the steering. Involves drilling a grease nipple into the aluminium housing and lubricating the internal (nylon?) joints. Worth a try before I go down the whole replacement route

Car booked into the paint shop on Thursday! :D

Private sale. The faults were WELL negotiated in the price :wink:

Apart from the minor paintwork (had very good experience at the booked in paint shop before) the car is immaculate. Full bmw service history. 4 reinvent new Conti's and new discs and pads all round.

I must say I have come from some great performance cars but so far I'm very impressed with the Z
