New From France

Hi

My name is Jean-Christophe. I live in France and own a 2004 Z4 E85 3L SMG with 192700km.

Multi owner of Porsche (944 and 996), I switched to the Z4 at the end of 2020.

For some time now, I've had my SMG box safe (toothed wheel light) and an F in front of the gear number.
Gears can no longer exceed third.

At times, after stopping and restarting, everything goes back to normal for a few minutes and sometimes the car stays in F1 and does not want to start (this is the case at the moment).

I have error codes 005017, 005018, 00507E, 00507F, 005080, 005081 and 005082.

In the meantime, I changed the clutch and the flywheel, bled the hydraulic pump but the problem persists.

The gearshift sensor has already been changed at 168000km in July 2019 and the selection sensor at 179000km in February 2020.

I'm going to open a post about it hoping to find some help there.

Best regards
JC

A brave user name. Hopefully someone educated in the black arts of auto transmission will be along shortly. In the mean time. Welcome to the forum. :D

Oh and we love pictures of Z4's if you have one handy.

Hi and welcome to the forum JC. That's a smart looking Z4 - good luck getting the SMG problem solved.

Is a potential gearbox swap to a convential auto a possible fix?
Since SMG is an automated manual, wouldn’t a more logical gearbox swap be to a conventional manual?

I would suspect a swap of any sort would be a better option than an SMG fix!

Nevertheless, I don't know to what extent it is authorized in France or if we have to change the papers of the car.

Welcome… took my Z round the South of France, epic :driving:

Your insurance Company are a good place to start for the correct advice 👍

Does an SMG equipped car have a two pedal or three pedal set up?

That would influence my choice of gearbox.

You would need to inform your insurance company I would have thought as it could be considered as a performance mod. After all, manuals are faster :poke:

If it currently has only a brake and an accelerator pedal and you are contemplating a gearbox substitution, then I would say an auto box is the only economical way to do it.

Tonight there was a Wheeler dealers episode on TV they converted an M3 E46 from SMG to Manual
they even modified the SMG box to manual.
It’s probably easier to find a S/H manual box remember the car ECU has to be reprogrammed to manual

Cost wise probably marginal unless you can do all the work yourself.
