New Ford Focus RS

Give me an Audi S3 any day for a fast road-going hot hatch that is also comfy and so on.

OK, the RS is probably a bit more fun, but imho, if fun is really your bag, as CJ said, best with a diesel Focus or something for £10k 2nd hand, and then a nice £15k 111S Lotus or similar.

Dave

Trouble is there you would have to tax, insure and MOT 2 cars every year then!

....and I bet the overall cost is still way less given how expensive the Ford will be to insure and the deprecitation it will see.
Each to their own of course.

No Breaker - my first "fast" car was a 2.8 v6 Capri so i don't hate them. I just don't see why they have such a strong following. They haven't made a really good looking one for years, they have a poor dealer network, mainly poor residuals, no pedigree like they used to, Barry Boy image and it will not doubt cost a bundle to insure and attract the Plod like nothing else - especially in curry puke nuclear green.

It's fugly, lairy and not that fast. If you want a mega technological speed machine, buy an Evo or Scooby or better yet the Nissan GTR. If you want handling and pure fun buy a Lotus, VX220 or Caterham/Westfield/Atom. If you want a classy "hot hatch" then for me it's Golf GTI/S3/Cupra. The RS tries to do a lot of things but doesn't achieve any of them properly.

Top speed is good (academic I know) and the 0-62 time is probably something to do with engine mapping off the line. I bet the 50 to 70 type times are good!

Well it must be an unknown, inbuilt "chav" in me because I have a feeling when I see an RS on the road, I'll go and buy one!! :P

I've had a few Fords and I liked them. RS2000 ("bull nose" model), tuned RS Turbo Mk2, Probe (slight mistake there, but was a good car. Basically a Mazda 6) and my last one an ST24 Mondeo. That was a good car!

I love fast Fords! I'll always have a soft spot for them. I'm off to the Ford Fair at Silverstone soon :)

I absolutely love the new Focus RS, especially in curry puke nuclear green. It's an awesome car. I paid exactly the same amount for my Z4 as what the Focus RS costs. If it had come out 6 months earlier i would have had a very tough decision to make. But i could not wait to get a new car and this Z4 was my perfect one so i couldn't let it go.

Evo - Look s**t, common and 'chav'
Scooby - Look s**t, common and 'chav'
Nissan GTR - I'm sure most people would rather have this if they had the money to pay nearly 3 times the price of the FRS.
Lotus - Unpracticle
VX220 - Unpracticle
Caterham - Unpracticle
Westfield - Unpracticle
The Focus will be getting used for the weekly shop and get the kids in the back too.
Golf GTI - Just not that special unlike the RS
Cupra - Same ^^
S3 - Good car, but a lot of people buying the FRS are going to be Ford followers.
It has everything you've listed above for the other cars, just doesn't focus on 1 specific area. Your hardly going to see any others on the road, and it's going to hold it's value like the mk1 FRS. It's an all round fantastic car for the people that are going to appreciate it.

Fair enough Lucy, each to their own. I know you say the Evo and Scooby look rubbish - how can you say that the RS looks any better? It looks like a Focus that's been to Halfords. Yuck. The Golf GTI (i've had 2 mk5s) is the best all round hatch for my money. It looks great (unlike the new one which is a little ingainly), drives and handles really well and at 227bph (for the ED30 or Pirelli) it has plenty of power for a front drive car. I guess i just like subtle styles more than the brash and loud. I must be getting old.

Because in my opinion it does. I appreciate that it's not going to be to some peoples tastes but i think it looks fantastic. And i was dribbling over the seats when i was looking at one

With Lucy +1
Seen a green one and a white one out and about now and they look ace on the road, my hopes of getting in a demo seem to be dashed now all 4000 allocated for this year have been sold aready.
For a giggle check out how much people are asking for them on autotrader atm, there was one on there for 35K the other day?
I bet its the last year ford are going to use the volvo engine too, making it the perfect car to give it the send off it deserves and helping it towards classic status and strong residuals.
I'd have one in an instant, if i wasnt so chuffed with my coupe.

I don't think it'll hold it's value like the Mk1 FRS, mainly because we know, and Ford know, it's made to make a profit.

The last one was a loss-leader, by a fair margin, just like the Mk1 Mini... look how well that performed residually!

Old FRS was a £25k+ car for £20k, and built in limited numbers, this has neither of those things going for it. It's a car sold with normal profit margins added in, and will be sold in as many numbers as possible to balance the books more and more!

That alone will make it cost a great deal more to own in the long run. I think after the first year hype and demand shortages it'll be well on course for a 50% retained value in 36 months, just like the mk2 Focus ST had...

That said, that makes the ST now a great buy, and I think in three years the RS will be a fantastic used buy for anyone who wants a huge ballistic hatchback!

Dave

I'll take one in blue please.

Work mate is going to see about one so I'll be listening to what they got to say.

I'd be seriously tempted if only it was more exclusive. Your gonna turn up at a car meet in your shiney new £27k Focus only for there to be ten others in the same colour.

Do you think Ford will release more colours nearer end of production, or 4 wheel drive  ? That said I'd only have it in blue or white.

I think there are only 4,000 RS's allotted to the UK this year and they have all sold.

But the old one was just over 2,000 full stop for the UK, in the several years of production.

4000 sold in the UK alone, already, is, err, twice as many.

I don't think it will be a rarity or a residual strong hold. It will be for the first 12 months, but mk1 Audi TT's were for the first 12 months, then they jumped on the good old 20% per annum depreciation train :)

Dave

Jamie, jamie, jamie. I can't believe what i'm reading. Your Megane was a much better looker. The Focus is a CID not-so-undercover car and the RS is a drug dealer not-so-undercover car.

Yeah yeah

I can appreciate it for what it is but I would never hand over the cash.

I would also imagine it would be a desirable trophy for the criminal underworld to steal, which is worrying when it's on your driveway.

Just had a look on Autotrader - £35k

I pity the deluded fool who buys it for that.

Don't mind the looks so much, just the drivetrain.

Actualy that is a good point, proven to me only last night!

I like the way the RS looks but I would have to be more selective where I parked it than the Z4!!

I was at a gym where I teach last night and in the car park there was a Clio parked 2 spaces from my Z4 and a Golf GTi (both quite new cars) parked next to mine. Both cars had had their passenger windows smashed and the cars broken into last night!! My Z4 was left alone! Wonder if that had been the case if I had an RS parked there?

This month's Evo mag ran the new RS against a Mountune? ST and the ST was quicker!!!!! Shows you how much performance you can get out of a turbo by a good chip an'tune!
