New face lift fogs arrived

After years of getting advisories on my mot due to misted front fogs I decided to shop around and managed to get two new fogs from Euro car parts for £100, not sure if they are OEM quality but they are magneti marelli so should be ok. They are fully plastic which surprised me as I thought the rear half may have been an aluminium casting or something similar.

Before I fit them does anyone have any ideas as to how future water ingress and paint lift can be negated? I assume water gets in through the join between the lens and rear housing? So a bead of clear silicone (paint friendly version) could work if applied neatly. However looking at the lights it would appear the rear housing is compromised any way by a cut out where a plastic clip firs in place (see bottom left corner in the close up shot).

But from what I know about these fogs, no matter what, somehow, condensation builds up on the inside, no matter what you do to try to eliminate it, or pre-modification such as a gel to help tighten it up so it does not occur, it will happen.

It is going to happen no matter what. I also want a new set as current set has serious oxidation going on. But I do know when I order a new set to fit, I will drill 2 holes at the bottom of both corners so they can Breath. (IE, let air in and out.)

I drilled my current set and rarely see the condensation that has them oxidized now. They were always misted up and never dried out. Now they are always clear of condensation.
 
My logic is that condensation gets in with the natural heating and cooling of the lights with sun, night, etc., which pulls in and out air, carrying moisture. You'll never seal it as the air will move around the bulb, wires, etc. If you look at any headlight it has air vents for this very reason.

Using them will heat the air 'burn' off condensation and keep them drier as will the crude but effective idea of drilling holes, however if they get soaked in rain or a flooded road, you may get a lot more water in

Thanks for the advice, looks like the holes have worked well. What size holes did you drill? Seems a shame to drill nice new lights though! I guess a few 2mm holes at the lowest points of the lens would barely be visible and any excess water should naturally drain out.

I have two brand new ones sitting waiting to be fitted....I sealed them (again) with clear silicone around where the clear plastic meets the silver back. Might help I figure...

In the meantime, the ones fitted to the car (refurbed last year) are still going strong. The one that obviously didn't get such a good dose of Tiger Seal in reassembly and steamed up has since 'unsteamed' itself....I'll wait another few months to see if I change to the new ones or not....
