F1 ENGINE RULES FROM 2013
1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbos with energy recovery and fuel restrictions to replace current 2.4-litre normally aspirated V8s
Fuel efficiency to increase by a target of 50%
Overall power to remain same at approx 750bhp
Checks and balances to ensure costs are contained and performance across all engines remains comparable
Plan for advanced 'compound' turbos to be introduced in subsequent years
Power of Kers energy recovery systems to increase from 60kw in 2011 to 120kw in 2013

I can see BMW will put a 4-cylinder engine in M cars in near future. Turbo-charged 6-cylinder in the next M3 is just the beginning.

Oh come on, I cannot be the only one who grew up with the sound of the turbo V6 of the late 70's. The RS10 produced 1500 hp so who cares how many cylinders they have!

If they can get 750hp from 3 squirrels on an exercise wheel it would be fine with me.....

It's who crosses the line first not how you sound doing it... :D

How many turbos are needed in a 1.6-litre engine to produce such power? Veyron has 4 turbochargers.

nothing wrong with downcylindering. Will make the Engineering challenge a hell of a lot more interesting.

I reckon they'll have a straight set up, there are stability issues with a V4.

Looks like fun. A lot will hate these new regs, I'm just looking forward to seeing what the teams will come up with. Brings out the geek in me I suppose

IIRC back in the turbo days (before my era) they used to produce 1500bhp in qualifying-spec from a 1.5litre engine, so these figures from a 1.6 will be no problem with today's better technology/reliability.

I'm thinking that many people saying they 'don't mind' are the ones who haven't been to see a race live at the track?

The sound of an F1 car is truly intoxicating and one of the most thrilling spectator experiences i've ever had. The old V10's were just insane, however the present V8's are still screamers.

From years back I remember vividly to this day a Friday practise session sat at Woodcote corner, Silverstone, my first Grand Prix. All the cars went out to do their initial sighting laps and returned to the pits as usual, followed by hundreds of loud pops and bangs of unburnt fuel (you don't hear that on TV!). Then all of a sudden, Rubens decided he wasn't following the rest and booted it down the straight unleashing all 19odd thousand V10 rpms! The resonance from the directional exhausts amplified in the stand unleashing a massive rush of adrenaline throughout the crowd to bring them all to their feet cheering...

Now i'm just imagining them sounding like a turbo'd hot hatch...  They're eventually going to be limiting the RPM to 10k too due to the direct injection; some S2000's are higher than that!

All I can say is, if you haven't been yet, just go see a race before it all gets spoilt. Just because the power will be similar, the experience will change vastly imo.

I remember the previous 1.5 litre turbo cars,The honda and BMW were indeed putting out 1500 bhp. They had special qually engines known as "detonators" which were designed to do a handful of laps at full chat before they blew up and special qually tyres which were scrap in 2 or 3 laps. These things flew and were so exciting to watch, so fast.A proper handful; for the drivers also. They had limited fuel and boost buttons for overtaking. They frequently ran out of fuel if the driver whacked it too much.Made F1 interesting.

Frankly I find the rule changes a joke. The rule changes are solely to keep the green crowd quiet and thus increase sponsorship income. I'm a man-made climate change skeptic and Clarksonite myself...so perhaps my view is biased...but I really disagree with the rule changes.

The carbon emissions made carting the teams all over the world vastly outweigh the emissions of the cars themselves...this is largely ignored.

I'm a massive fan of F1 and have actually enjoyed the last couple of seasons (despite thinking I wouldn't following rule changes). The racing has been close and the titles have gone down to the wire. However, if it were up to me, teams would be given much more control over the specs of the cars. I would like to see lap times getting faster each year, not progressively slower!

The designers behind the 2013 spec have been told they have to design a car that is not slower than 5 seconds per lap compared to the current cars. 5 seconds??!!! Thats an eternity in F1. Frankly, I think this is nonsense. The engines have been shrunk enough in a sport that is supposed to be the pinnacle of motor racing. I think it should remain an 'indulgence'...perhaps a guilty one given the green agenda, but the sport is on the verge of being watered down too far I think.

The 2013 cars will have 600bhp, increasing to 750bhp when the KERS is being used. The current cars already have 750bhp w/o KERS. This is not progression...

Oh well not much I can do really!

On a related note, I like the new Lotus livery for next season. Old school JPS stylee

Shame about the red accents. Let's hope others follow suit (the Williams Rothmans livery was one of my childhood favourites).

Yeah, agree Mafoo - that the only thing that lets it down. Williams Rothmans was very cool so fingers crossed they all go retro (incl Marlboro red/orange and white Maclaren)
