So it begins, owned her less than 24hrs and exhaust has popped, rusted out at the join to the down pipes. Any ideas of cost to replace?

Welcome along!

It won't be the exhaust itself that has rusted thru, it's stainless steel - but the studs and nuts that hold the exhaust system to the manifolds/CAT's are well known for corroding away, pita job, but doable with a bit of patience or 100-150 quids worth of somebody else's labour.

Good luck.

Just had mine done (see post under 'problems') Exhaust is only partly stainless and my flanges looked like they were done for but they werent. Exhaust man said if they had been beyond repair you couldnt quarantee welding on new flanges due to the upturn at that point and closeness to the exhaust sensors. I had mine cleaned up, new gaskets and bolts for £160 so yours sounds a bit cheap. New flanges will be a real tricky job and if they simply weld the exhaust to the manifolds you will be in real trouble if you ever need to remove the exhaust for new clutch etc.

Private sale I assume?

Hi Chaps,

Seems I have the same problem, the flange where the exhaust connects to the CAT looks completely rusted and the bolts holding it together look like they are about to disintegrate! :o

I was advised that the best thing to do here is to cut the flange off and just weld the exhaust together else if you start trying to fix up the flange and it doesn't work, it may mean a new exhaust at extensive cost.

Mike6's comment concerns me though about not being able to change the clutch if you weld it.

Can anyone offer any advice here?

Also, does anyone know of someone I can take it to? I am in the Fleet, Hampshire area...

Thanks!
Marco

As stated on the other post you probably just need to replace the rusted bolts. The flanges, although get very rusty, are pretty solid. My exhaust was only held on with one bolt. The rest had rusted away. I just drilled the stud out of the flange (manifold side) and replaced with nautical grade bolts and copper nuts.

You don't want to weld it together.

This was mine. Not the best pic as doesn't show the full extent of the rust.

Thanks Roundozo!

I will try and find someone locally who can do this, however I am less concerned now. Was it difficult to drill the studs out? If so, it tells me that they are probably not going to just fall out anytime soon! :)

Thanks
Marco
