New Engine

Hi,

Bought a Z4 15th September from a BMW dealership, its a 2006 2.0i and the engine light came on within 4 days of owning, so took it to the local dealer under warranty, secondary air pump was the fault according to the diagnostics, the fix it and I drive off, anyway 4 days later the engine light comes on again, take it the dealer, this time the diagnostics throw back numerous faults so they pass it onto a master technician, after nearly 2 weeks now they have worked out that one of the airways for the secondary air pump is blocked and they cant unblock it so the warranty people have decided to replace the whole engine! I mean block and head! Is this normal and has any one else had this problem?

How much do you think a new engine would cost them?

Impressive!!!

The secondary air pump, only provides air for 1 minute during cold starts to the λ sensor at the exhaust, so that there will not be produced high emissions (CO2, etc) and then stops working as the engine is then warmed.

It is logical when its not working properly or blocked to have the engine light. But this would not create "numerous faults", but only one at the diagnosis.

Could you please tell us which other faults were found?
And with what the airway has been blocked?
Any photos?

Sorry for all such questions but this is the 1st time I read something like this!!!

Lucky you anyway that they change to a new engine.

As far as prices you can find them here: http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E85/Roadster/Europe/Z4_2.0i-N46/RHD/N/2006/may/browse/engine/
having in mind that these prices are without transportation costs, VAT and the dealers' profits.

I can tell you a new head fitted for a 2.5si costs £3.5k under warranty so I guess you are looking at £7-8k probably less as there is probably more involved in the head.

Cheaper for them to do that though than give you a new car.

Hi,

Dont have any more news as it was a warranty job, all they told me was one of the drill ways was blocked in the head so they were originally just going to replace that but the warranty people came back to them and said replace the whole engine, I guess they just wanted everything matched up! Looks like I have got loads of new components that are attached to the engine.

Lets hope this one is OK. Its just a thought but do I have to get my servicing schedule changed?

New head is easy swap as per mine, but I am guessing with the problem you had they dont want you coming back later with big end issues.
