New engine noise... not seen in other posts

Just under 41K, Inspection 2 next week. Still has 3.7K left but 2 years are up and that might not last me two years. Plus all fluids etc will be change so no bad thing.
Mine gets new oil about every 3 months, plus before & after 'Ring trips - so probably does no more that 7,000 between oil/filter changes.

Might be overkill, but that is less frequent than the official e34 M5 schedule of 6,000 miles.

My service indicator interval has been halved so it has two oil services between every inspection. Since this is based on fuel consumption, mine rarely sees 7,000 miles between oil and filter changes due to the nature of the way I use it (hoons and track days without much low-rpm motorway cruising).

Mine get an oil change every 4k or so, which is 2 years for me.

3.7k left is for inspection 2 only.

Personally, I wouldn't drive that any further. If you're not already on ZPOST then start a thread there asking for garage recommendations- there seems to be plenty of people local to you on that site so hopefully they can help.

Fingers crossed it's just a loose engine mount (!) or something nice and cheap, but if I had to bet, I'd say you've got a bit of Bill coming your way whether it's cams, bottom end or otherwise :(

Best of luck with it.

Have you tried simple things like the ignition coils?

I've heard very rough running S54's due to this.
This is not a misfire noise. This is more like someone has swapped his engine for a washing machine with a brick in it.

I have found a shop in Dublin California. they are specialists in the M world and the S54. Performance Technic. I have an appointment on Friday.

When I listen with a long screwdriver, the valvetrain sound good and the loud sound can't be heard except when I have the screwdriver on the Vanos housing at the from of the engine.

More to follow.

Let's hope it's the VANOS - at least that can be rebuilt or swapped out if it's knackered! I've only heard failing VANOSs from S50 Z3MCs and they had a rumbling growl on the overrun and were a bit down on power.

Just a thought - you've not inadvertently over-revved by changing down into too low a gear?

wouldnt the rev limiter stop that hapening ? :?

Rev limiters only work on the way up, if you stick it in the wrong gear for the road speed then the engine gets spun up to match!

Thanks for all the feedback. I drove it to Performance Technic (PT) in Dublin and they know and race the S54 engines.

PY were did a vanos test using the OBD and showed vanos issues (don't know why the dealer did not do this except they were not used to the S54?). PT opened the engine and found a broken lobe on the vanos and cracked exhaust hub.

My extended warranty is covering this. score one for me. I could have had a new BMW vanos but I opted to use the Dr Vanos rebuilt vanos and their cryo hub. This is less expensive and the tab 'slop' is reduced in the oil disk by drilling smaller holes. They will do a valve adjustment and oil change too.

If there are additional issues, I will follow up.
