New Engine needed

At the end of July my engine started tapping - thought it was tappets. Turns out it wasn’t and it was the big end had gone and was throwing bits of brass around the engine…
Long story short I need a new engine specifically a 3.0 N52 N52B30A 258HP.

I am on a waiting list for one but this means waiting for a car to crash with the right miles and passes inspection…

The question is would any N52B30A suit or is the Z4 specific? I know this engine is fairly common with BMWs

Just want some guidance as I miss this damn car and want to get it sorted!

That's an unusual failure for an N52. :o

As far as I know they are all the same, although some ancillaries may differ from model to model. I know someone on here cooked his 130i engine when the water pump died on track and replaced it with one out of a written-off Z4 Coupe that he broke. ( I bought the wheels). :D

My E90 330i has an N52, 530s and 630s also used them and I'm pretty sure X3s and X5s did too.

Good luck getting your car fixed.

Given that I have this engine in both my Z4 and 5 series I’m worried now. I wonder if it was random or maintenance related?

I have no idea what caused it. Probably maintenance.
I was in France and it flagged up add oil on the motorway which I then did as soon as I could.
Fine for a month and then I did a long trip from Bath to Chester and then to Kent in three days. On the way to Kent it flagged up to add 1L of oil to which again I did. Then I was caught in horrible start stop traffic. The next day it started tapping.

This is one good reason to have a dipstick.
Learn so much by monitoring level and colour.
Was the oil level sensor faulty.
Had it been very low and say some prolonged turn allowed air in the system.

I think i looked years ago to see if dipstick could be fitted.
Realoem seemed to show the blanked area a dipstick would fit.

It's annoying that the BMW pictures show tube for dipstick but not on actual pans.
Also seems half dozen updates on the oil level sensor.

Good doing 5k oil changes you know you are putting in the right required quantity of oil.
Not relying on the oil sensor too much.
My car 23i N52 burns 1 litre in 5k miles of daily start stops.

My experience of all my BMW engines is they they use very little to no oil. Certainly was the case on my 323i, 330ds (e46 LCI and e90/ 91) and 430dx and now a 440i. Maybe there was some engine wear from a previous owner?

My daily journeys are short and barely gets up to temperature.
These engines run hot so i suspect large piston cylinder clearances when cold burns oil.

My M54 randomly decided to use oil then will go for months and not use a drop.
So is it a winter vs summer event.

Every other car i ever owned i would say burnt virtually no oil, except RX7.
My other car, Berlingo burns no oil over 5k miles.
