New E89 bought - dealer problem?

New poster and some help would be good -

Delighted to have purchased a rather splendid orange E89 on Saturday. Part of the deal was to have the roof painted black - dealer said he would check with BMW body shop and confirm it could be done.

They now say apparently not as the 'roof won't go back together and the seals will leak'. Instead they say they can wrap it. My preference is paint.

Seems odd but I'm no paint / roof expert - any comments? Are they simply going for the cheaper option?

Cheers

Hi and welcome to the forum
Sounds like their trying to get out of the deal and do it on the cheap but I can see there might be big problems
taking apart and putting back together a complex roof mechanism
Sorry no help but don't really know what I would do in your situation :?

Eeek, I would imagine the salesman would have said yes sir we can paint that no probs without consulting the bodyshop. They might have a point as taking the roof apart unecessarily could give you allsorts of headaches down the line. I would seriously think about getting it painted, these roofs can leak brand new so I wouldn't go messing with it and leave well alone.

Tim.

Considering the amount of issues I had with a new fabric roof being fitted to my pervious car I can only imagine the horror that would come from a dealership talking it to bits and then putting it back together would fill me with dread. Not sure what would happen if in a year or so the roof failed or leaked because something wasn't as it should have been. Yes it could be fixed but for how long and how much hassle would you want.

A wrap won't look bad but it also won't look as good as a proper paint job but on the other hand if you did fancy a change you could have it removed. My only issue with a wrap would be the quality of the wrapping and how it's cut. Last thing you want is damaged seals or the paint being scored whilst they cut the wrap. You don't want your car roof to rust because bmw wouldn't be helping on that one.

I would go with the wrap, just imagine the potential for squeaks and rattles if they do a shoddy job putting the complex roof back together

Aren't the roof panels made of aluminium?

Tim.

Possibly, would make sense in terms of weight. However although aluminium doesn't rust, it still can oxidise. However I wouldn't be too happy to find if the wrap is removed, damaged paint from a stray blade.

+1 Wrapp

Yes the finish is really cool - do some research and find an good quality installer - as there are lots of people who do.

And if you don't like it, you just take it off.

Also it can protect your paint work, and less affected with stone chips.

Rather an appropriate if Freudian typo Angie!

100% wrap... You will be surprised how good the quality is...they look fantastic.

The best part is that if you don't like it or wish to sell in the future to someone who dislikes it, you can peel it off without any damage.

Plus, it doesnt take too long so you should be able to get it done within a few hours!

Where are you based, there are some very good shops around that can wrap pretty much anything?

This is the route I'd take if you definitely want the roof in black.

Many thanks all - have asked the dealer to arrange a wrap with a decent firm - hoping to have the car next week and post some photos. Looks rather like metal licker's - he's clearly a man with fine taste!
