New DMF cost?

How much will a new DMF cost to be installed?

I get noise from the clutch area which disappears upon depressing the clutch.
Also stopping the engine with the clutch out there is a distinct rattle, so pretty sure it needed replacing.
Clutch seems fine though.

Car has done 120k miles but most of that is motorway miles.

Anything else recommended to do at the same time?

Thanks

A lot of us experience this on our Z4s. I think so many of us have continued with our rattly flywheels for so long that it's seen as a "replace if you're embarrassed by it" level of maintenance/concern. My 3.0i did this (only on shutdown) for the full two years I owned it, and didn't worsen or change in that time. I'm not saying that replacing it wouldn't be the ideal solution, and if yours is making noise while the engine is still running, perhaps it's a bit more advanced and unhappy.

Unless the clutch was replaced in the last 30,000 miles or so or looks brand new when you remove the gearbox, I would recommend replacing it. You'll kick yourself if it expires in 6 months' time because you didn't replace it, plus it's a strong selling point.

I did watch Bavarian autos do a clutch and DMF swap and they replaced a load of seals plus a drive shaft coupling as it was all apart.
I’d definitely do the clutch at the same time.

It’s more noticeable on shutdown with the clutch out but I always have the clutch in. Just noisy if sat in traffic.

Would be interested in knowing how much it will cost just a ballpark figure. 500? 1000?

I was quoted £1,750 to replace the clutch and flywheel on my Audi A3 by a local independent specialist I've been using for a while :o

For both clutch & flywheel (OEM, not Genuine BMW branded) on my Z4M it was £1176, including a new rear mains oil seal, at a local BMW specialist.
  • Clutch £336
  • DMF £570
  • Labour £270 (5 hours @ £54/hour)

Wow, didn't realise this was done all the way back in 2015

I could also have had it done using Genuine BMW branded parts at the specialist for about £2400, or at the dealer for about £3200.

FWIW mine was replaced as it was worn out at 140,000 miles, not because of any noise

Your’s could just be the release bearing, but if you’re going to spend the money replacing that, you might as well spend a little more and tick another job off the list whilst you’re in there.

Is that noise definately DMF and not a soggy prop shaft guibo?
DMF not cheap to replace only to find noise still there (not personal experience but someone I know, and why I continue to live with the noise from mine).

Is the prop shaft guiro the rubber bush between the gearbox and prop shaft?

The noise changes with pressing the clutch in plus the noise/rattle on engine shutdown.

I've got the same issue (amongst many at the moment)
Mines on 148k. I thought I had a transit behind me at one point the rattle was that bad in traffic.

Cheers guys. Looks like an expensive job but will need doing before it goes bang.

Looking at a lightened flywheel/SMF instead of a DMF. Is this worth it or just not necessary on a daily drive?

only if you’re racing and don’t mind more rattle & less engine braking.

Mine first started making a noise 2 years ago. I haven't replaced it and it's still going strong. I was quoted £1050 for a clutch, flywheel and rear main seal replacement.

Thought as much about the flywheel. Big arguments going either way.

Best to get a quote from my local garage.
Might change the giubo at the same time too.

I did this job last week, I paid £380 for the LUK DMF exact match for the one thats original , exactly the same as the one that came off which also was LUK, needs to be the correct one as there are different weights for the 3 series and some without the pilot bearing pressed in. £141 for the LUK clutch kit includes thrust bearing but with the larger clutch disc from the 3 series 240mm rather than the smaller one for the Z4 (god knows why they did that) I also replaced the pivot ball £8 , rear main seal £13 and rear main seal housing gasket £6 , its a bitch of a job so the £300 or so you are paying a mechanic is well earned , also some special tools are needed to align it and release the SAC of which I had to mess about and create as they are $$$. I have also drilled out the clutch nanny valve. I did a lot of research prior to this about going solid which I concluded was a absolute no due to lots of rattle from 6 speed gearbox at idle (youtube videos showing this and its loud) my DMF didn't really need changing just the clutch disc as it was slipping but I certainly dont want to be doing that job again in the next 10 years so changed the DMF too. I have noticed though there is no clunk when turning the engine off so maybe it was starting to fail. Your rattle when depressing the clutch sounds exactly like the symptoms in my 120d of a failing DMF flywheel I believe this is what it sounds like when the centre bearing within the DMF is failing as its allowing the 2 metal flywheel pieces to touch each other when I think its allowed 2.5 mm of play before being considered failed.

Got a quote for just over a grand which is expected.
My exhaust bolts are rusted to buggery so I'll get them to drill them out whilst they are there. Plus the giubo and the gear linkage bushes too.
Also got them to delete the CDV.

Hopefully will be like a new car to drive when it's done.

I'll report back on the garage too, not used them before but have a good reputation with BMW owners.

All good.... DMF and Clutch changed.... all working. I do have a strange thump sometimes when stationary and putting in gear. This doesnt happen if I hold the clutch for longer then put it gear. My guess is there is a bushing somewhere that needs changing.

I never got the clutch or dmf done. The garage said the noise was more likely due to a gearbox bearing and they have never heard of one going south. Plus it's not something they said could be repaired without a replacement gearbox. Still going strong on the original clutch.
