New discs and pads - members experience?

Hi folks

I'm about to replace my discs and pads and started looking in the usual supplier net - Eurocarparts etc. Then on to eBay and it looks like a bit of a minefield out there with prices all over the place

Any forum members replaced their discs and pads recently ? What did you replace with and are you happy with the results?

Tempted to go with either Pagid or Textar from Eurocarparts for the peace of mind of go buy pickup see exactly what you are buying type security , but, they are a lot cheaper on eBay and there are some slotted drilled sets at good prices that are tempting such as these:

Or these:

Interested in any experience with specific makes and also any advice you folks may have for best £ to quality options?

I've had those ones in the second link on my watch list for a while. I don't need pads or discs for a while but would like the crossed drilled ones. They seem good value at £200 for the whole lot too.

What bothers me is - would this be classed as another "mod" I have to tell the insurance about?

Ps agreed on the pads it may be worth spending a little more for pagid or those textar e pads - supposed to be very low dust iirc.

I went for Textar discs and the epads from ECP and all is good  The Epads feel like the originals and there is less dust, but more importantly what dust there doesn't seem to stick probably because the epad is low iron high ceramic content. Although they are quite a lot more expensive I suppose the cost per mile/year is minimal.

There was a similar discussion recently with other thoughts here http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=68149&p=1002978&hilit=+textar#p1002978

Bought that exact set from MTEC a couple of months ago. No problems, not any more dust than the originals, a fraction noisier due to the grooves and drills but would definitely recommend them. No bother to fit, all the corner done and calipers painted in a morning.

I've no complaints with mine Spikey. it took about 60-70 miles for them to bed in and now after about 150 tthey seem to be getting even sharper. They look OK too.

All the details are in the post below:

I've fitted the mtec ones to my last 4/5 cars over the years, very happy with them, the only problem was they rusted ! I painted mine prior to fitting & they were fine.i believe they now offer coatings that might be a good idea. Looked great & worked well. Phone them & ask to get mintex pads & they will give you a deal if you mention the forum.

Was interested in this for my track car and the opinions seem to be divided there for heavy/abusive use due to cracking (though this may be due to the inherent nature of drilled discs).

Just worth pointing out (and hence why I didn't opt for them).

Thanks folks for the very useful views and experience very helpful

So good history on the mtec supplied kits of four and I have spotted the black coated ones that would hopefully address the corrosion problem

One worry bead though I have never personally experienced brake pad break up or disintigration in 30 years of driving - but I have never used slotted and drilled disks - is there a link between drilled and slotted rotors and excessive pad wear??

Also how noticeable is the increased noise with these rotors - mine is a daily driver

Thanks for answers so far

I fitted a complete set of slotted and drilled Mtec discs and pads a couple of months ago. They are certainly noisier, especially noticeable with the top down but with your coupe it won't be so much of an issue. The rears seem more noticeable but that's probably because they're right behind my head.

They do quite down after a few months  for the money I think they are fantastic & look great IMO

Good to know, thanks. I certainly like the look of them and the brakes work well. :driving:

If I'm not mistaking I went with ATE pads and Textar discs. We took special care replacing the discs; that means we thoroughly cleaned all the surfaces, lubricated what was necessary and I took special care breaking them in. After a track day brakes are still going strong - no fading and no juddering.
It's important that you clean the area around the disc and that you torque bolts and nuts to factory specs.

Just my 5c: I think the biggest issue with discs is diameter. So if the stock discs are not up to the job you won't change much with replacing them with the same diameter but different brand. Disk is a piece of metal. And that's mostly it. Drilled one will actually fatigue faster. But they will disperse gasses better than regular ones - that would come handy when doing track days NOT street. So in the end you're left with different choices of pads. In my humble opinion I would say that the only area to experiment and actually see different results are pads. Going harder or softer. Harder will do a good job on race track but will wear out the discs much faster. So my 5c short: is stock package was up to the job of your driving style go with the same spec but aftermarket ones.

I have the mtec grooved discs all round. I get vibration trough the steering under hard braking! But they work well and quality for price they are very good value.

If your getting vibration MM your discs are probably warped ! Never had any problems with mine. I would be on the phone to them

They have always done it? It dose not feel like a warped disc. Maybe vibration is the wrong word it more a buzz. And only under very hard braking.

Thats how I would describe it. More of a buzz under hard breaking and only since I changed to drilled and slotted fronts. It makes sense when you look at the physics of the discs.

I'm thinking I'm gonna go with the mtec black finished drilled and slotted discs - not because I think they will be any better than OEM - more that I like them cosmetically

However, I'm gonna call my insurance company to check - and if they want a bean extra from me for fitting these then they can go spin and I'll fit OEM

Thanks for the debate / help folks

I know what you mean now  think you'll get that on all drilled & grooved discs. I changed to drilled only on my auld 335

I recently switched my front rotors to Bavauto cross-drilled rotors, and installed Akebono euro ceramic pads. No problems at all, and the brake feel is same as OEM, but much less dust due to the Akebono pads.

I run M-tec disks all round, done 3 trackdays on them, holding up just fine.

The pads I found weren't fantastic though, use Ferodo DS2500's on the front now... Far better. Can tend to squeel/squeak abit when really hot, but that doesn't bother me
