New disc advice

Hi all,

Has anyone got any advice for replacement discs for a Z4 Coupe?

I want to keep the car original but i'm getting quoted £300 for front discs and pads from the main dealer. It seems hard to justify in the face of Brembos for £100 all in...

Anyone got any advice for decent aftermarkets OR if i should just stay OEM?

It's all the worse as i need to replace them after the car sat unused for a month or so in the winter - anyone know how the disc has "warped" due to the cold temps? i'm getting binding and pedal feedback when braking (i've scrubbed brakes and driven about 500 miles but its not clearing)

Hi Liam,

First off i've not changed my Z4 discs yet ( but have changed plenty of other on other cars ), but I would go for Brembos ( and did on my last car ), they have some that have a grove in that tells you when there due for changing, simple but nice, saves getting the verniers out :) Also I don't think anyone would care if there BMW or not ? Ive certainly never asked what brand the discs are when buying a car.

As for your reasons for changing them, Ive never seen discs warp from cold weather. Have you stripped down the caliper and lubricated the piston, pushing it in and out several times ? Have you checked all of the pads ? I don't know if its a floating caliper on the Z4, but that should be checked to make sure its free if it is ( take the pads out, then ensure the caliper can 'float' backwards and forwards ). Jack the car up and spin the wheel by hand, if it stops solid ( you may hear a light chuch, chuch noise, thats normal ) at a particular point then yes its warped, but its more likley to be rust thats the issue from being stood up over winter.

£300 is about right for genuine BMW discs and pads from a dealer (£100 a disc and £100 for pads).

You can get discounted genuine parts from BMminiparts for about 20% cheaper, or OEM/OEQ pattern parts for less at places like EuroCarParts / GSFcarparts /etc.

I've had the car jacked up and spun the wheel, there is indeed a point where the pad catches the disc on a revolution and slows the wheel.

I'll maybe try a staged approach - strip the caliper, clean the pads; if that doesnt work - new pads and if still no joy go for the new discs.

I was a bit concerned about using non-OEM as car is still covered by BMW approved warranty so was being careful :)

They're unlikely to be warped, but if they are you might want to approach the dealer about replacing them under warranty.

If they're not warped then use anything you like, as normal wear & tear is not covered under warranty anyway.
