Ok so im looking to get a new DISA valve for my M54 engine, ive had a quote from BMW of £203. anyone know a better place i might look?

No need to go to BMW as its an easy job to do yourself.

I fitted an upgraded unit in mine just for the sake of knowing its been done for £65

EDIT: I think I made an offer of £50 and it was accepted!

mine already has these upgraded parts but is still making a terrible noise?

All BMW will do is replace the valve again with their plastic unit (unless the quote is for the whole housing as well) and I don't know if you fitted the upgrade yourself but maybe it wasn't fitted correctly or greased enough as the upgrade kit is tight on the grease they supply.

It's only a few bolts or screws to take off so it's worth taking off yourself and having a look to see whet the fault could be before paying BMW as its a simple unit so not hard to spot a fault.

Well i had one of my Indy garages do the job, and they are tight on the grease, what should I be looking for when I take a look at it? Could it just be down to not enough grease?

Open the unit yourself and you will find its just a kind of vacuum release pump/valve with not may moving bits apart from the flap in the valve.

Hold the flap on the valve closed with your hand covering the intake and it should stay closed. then release your hand off the inlet and the valve should SMOOTHLY open again. If the movement isn't smooth, it means the pin hasn't been greased correctly and if you got an Indy to do it and not yourself, they may find they have missed greasing the pin altogether or forgot a washer.

As I said its not a complex unit so once you open it, it wont be hard to spot any faults and all BMW will do is replace the valve for a new one which you can do yourself within half an hour.

Thats great, thanks for the info! ill get it out and have a look, are there any instruction on which parts needs grease?

Take out the retaining clip from the side that is facing towards you which is under the plastic cover then remove the screw to slide the pin out. grease properly at both ends then refit. If its over tightened and/or not greased correctly it will stick when opening and closing.

The ebay link has a video for fitting so just use the reverse process for removing the pin.

After that close the valve and cover the intake then uncover and the valve should move freely back to its original postion.

Good luck

So had the DISA valve out this evening! It seems to move ok! However sounds like something has gone inside the end. It's not very easy to hear due to the wind but wondered what people think? It's already got the upgraded parts but wondering if it's worth replacing?

Also closed the valve with my finger over the vacuum hole and it opened up about 45 degree!

Hiya,

Only opened mine once so cant really remember what noises it should or shouldn't make. Below is a Dropbox link to download detailed pictorial instructions from i6Automotive who supplied my part so I'd suggest using the instruction to remove and refit again (making sure to grease all the necessary parts) and if that doesn't resolve it, I think you may need to replace the housing as I don't think that's a serviceable part (I could be wrong on that).

Good luck
