New diff

My cars having a new diff in a couple of days, I'm pretty sure that means that I have to follow the running in procedure again but am I right in thinking that the diff needs the oil changing after 1200 miles? If so is that paid for by the dealer/BMW like the original running in service?

Don't know the answer but if it's a warranty job then surely BMW pick up the tab for the oil change.

Dgm I did expect BMW to pay for the oil change if it needs one, it's just I can't imagine the dealer being that clued up on matters TBH.

Sammy the diff has just started whining over the last few thousand miles, the strange bit is it only does it if the car is coasting or under engine braking, touch the throttle and it's whisper quiet.

What mileage are we talking about that your dif has covered?

You are probably right if my recent experience with my gearbox is anything to go by.

It will be very interesting to hear from the dealer what the cause was after they have removed the old diff. Keep us informed as it will make an interesting read.

I should think the dealer will just return the diff to BMW rather than checking it out, but I would guess that the backlash between the crown and pinion wasn't set correctly from new.

very strange indeed

same symptoms to that on my e46 - but it went CRUNCH on me eventually - not too expnsive to replace!
