New colour.

I’m thinking about changing the colour of my car. Most panels need work done anyway and I’m getting fed up with black so I would like it changed to probably VW deep pearl blue (R32 colour). My question is, what are ballpark figures for a colour change and is it worth it?

I can't help with figures, but from my guess a colour change is going to be expensive and labour intensive. You'll be looking at colour changing the bits you don't see i.e under the bonnet, insides of the door shuts and any other bits i may not have mentioned. I know if I were in your shoes, I'd go with the original colour, it will probably make you fall in love with your car again once you see it looking freshly painted. The other side of a colour change will be that it usually devalues the resale value of the car.
Just a bit of food for thought, but a fast and cheaper way of colour changing your car would be to get your car wrapped, its probably half the expense of a full on respray and looks pretty amazing when finished.

If you’re going to keep long term then maybe it’s worth the outlay, only you can decide.

Having said that, I’d seriously consider pricing up agreed value insurance in case someone hits you. It seems these are being written off for very minor injuries these days

Yup it seems the only spares you can get now, for some of the body panels, are from the breakers yard. :(

Why I am taking my time thinking if I should buy another ///MR. Cost of owner ship is only going to go upward. Great that the value will likely also do that. But a big factor in investing in these lovely cars, for the average retired Joe.

Door shuts will obviously need painting, but undersides of boot and bonnet are not body colour from the factory so could be left untouched. OP doesn't state which black his car is (bet it's Black Sapphire) but a slight change to Ruby Black etc could be worthwhile.

That would be a massive investment and wouldn't make economic sense, but I'm sure you know that so if you want to do it why not?

As suggested a swap to Ruby Black or Carbon Black might save the cost of getting the engine bay and door shuts done.

Good luck anyway if you decide to go ahead.

Thanks for the replies. I know it would be a big chunk of cash, probably more than the car is worth. I could sell it and buy a different one but I have the car how I want it (apart from aero skirts). Still undecided.😔

Have a word with Beedub at TopWrapz, he may have some good suggestions on colours and wraps that would satisfy your needs and save money on paint.

I think got some initial estimates and it was £2500 plus for a respray in the original colour and £3500 plus for a colour change, based in Warwickshire. Though they didn't see the car and they would want to see the car first and want to discuss how much the full spray went. This was earlier this year too.

Wraps where going to be £1,500 to £1,800 (estimates). You can get self healing wraps now from light scuffs. Your body work needs to be perfect so any small scuffs, dents or deep scratches will need to be fixed and is an extra cost but you could do this yourself, as the finish doesn't matter as long as it was smooth.

Admittedly I didn't fish around too much at the time for prices verses lead time.

One thing I would say is have you thought about keeping it the original colour but adding flashes of colours. I.E. painted features like wingmirrors, stripes etc.? This is something I was thinking about. Just need to get photoshop loaded back on my computers and have a play. I was inspired by the Mazda MX5 Nd special edition.
