New chap looking for a Z4 roadster

Hi Chaps, I've joined up (after a few weeks of just reading) as I'm after a nice BMW Z4 roadster 2006 onwards.

Currently I've got a peach of a VW Scirocco R-Line and a normal Ford Focus estate for everyday/taking the dogs out and about and the plan is to change up to a 2007-09 VW Passat estate for everyday plus a 2.5 Z4 roadster for fun.

My budget for a Z4 is going to be about £7k, maybe able to stretch to £8k, depending on when/how much I can get for the Scirocco and Focus when I come to sell them both before Christmas.

I'm looking for quite a particular one, has to be the 2006 model onwards, 6 cyclinder engine, not in black (had too many black cars now and its a mission to keep them looking so immaculate), with a 6spd 'box, a decent alloy wheel combo with leather that isn't red or white/cream with less than 60k on the clock. Is that possible?!

I've done the usual hunting around on autotrader/pistonheads and it seems that there are plently of 2003/04/05 models available for less than £6k, but I'm after one a bit newer. I've mainly had fast VW's in the past, can I expect the same reliability in a BMW? I've got very limited RWD experience, does it take much getting used to?

I've read that the power hoods can be a bit dodgy, as can the rear shocks - is there anything else I should be aware of?

What are the running costs going to be like? I've had a late-model VW Corrado 2.9 VR6 before which seemed to have huge running costs and I would tend to take my cars back to the dealership for servicing etc, unless I can find a specialist within Essex.

Thanks in advance for the replies.

Hi, welcome along. Should be possible to find one, best of luck. There have been some really nice cars sold on here in the last few weeks, definitely worth looking at the 'For Sale' section.

Where in Essex are you?

Hi David , id say you were well in the driving seat on option's & budget , the black paint will probably be the trickiest to avoid but certainly not impossible wants .
Wouldn't worry too much about problem's as most are well documented & relatively cheap+easy repairs
Running costs at a decent indy are not eye watering so all in all the Z4 is a good used car

Ah, I was meaning to ask about the options list. What options are there on a 2006+ Z4 roadster and which ones are deemed a must? I'm pretty sure I'd have to have one with heated seats and I seem to read a lot about not bothering with run-flat tyres.

Hi, the "M" sports seats are very desirable as is the 3.0 engine-it's just as economical as the 2.5 but with a fair bit more shove.

Welcome to the forum. Budget should be fine and keep an eye out on for the sale threads here as things move quickly around this time of year until around early March time.

+1 on going for 3.0 over 2.5 if you can. Extra bhp and like for like mpg. Most examples youll find on here will be running non-rft tyres I would imagine and as for rwd....you're going to have a lot of fun! The good news is the traction control system is fantastic and has a half-mode to allow you a little rear wheel spin as and when you require (or fully off for raw, fun, rwd crazy horse mode).

Like your Scirroco btw. Any other pictures? Always fancied an R in Viper Green with black wheels

Welcome to you and further to the comments on the 3.0 above, I have just bought one and can't believe how economic it is for something so quick, car tax is the same as the 2.5. I am not sure about 2006 models, but for 2003 models you would need to get a 3.0 if, as you say, you want a 6 speed box, as all other engines have 5 speed only?

I believe the facelift (2006 on)2.5si has a 6speed manual box

Indeed it does have 6 speed.

I have a silver grey 2.5Si Roadster, black Sport seats with upgraded hifi and piano black dash. Car has non run flats and MV2 wheels.

It's done 56k with a FSH. Next service due in 13,500 miles.
It also has heated leather.

Send me a PM if you'd like some more info and if the spec interests you.

PM sent mate.

My Scirocco goes in for its 'last' service tomorrow as me as it's owner, so I guess I need to get a move on selling it!

Plus the 2.0 2006 has the six speed gear box and very good economically to run :D

Oh, and welcome to the forum, good luck with your search.

Thanks mate. I think I've ruled out the 2.0 litre, ultimately this will be our 'fun' car so I'd want the extra ooomph and sound of a 6 cyclinder engine.
