New cars- is anything reliable and fun?

As a few of you probably know, I've been seriously thinking about selling my Z4MR.

I'd like a bit more practicality, ie. boot space, maybe occasionally be able to take more than one passenger.
The heavy clutch and steering, and occasionally akward gear change are a bit of a pain at low speeds.
The suspension could be a bit less crashy, especially with all these pot holes around.

The trouble is the car has spoilt me and I can't decide on a decent replacement that doesn't cost £10k more.
My M has been reliable and I've not needed a warranty, service costs are ok, fuel consumption is not bad with the mileage I do but it does have me thinking when I do a longer journey.

I want a decent sized petrol, automatic that doesn't feel dated inside and has a nice spec. Fuel consumption is fine as long as it's not worse than the M

I went to look at an '05 645 at the weekend, it's still not totally practical but it has enough space for me. Not sure how fun it would be on the back roads and looking at forum reports, it's best to own one with a warranty, I'd probably try get into a AUC 650 if I went this route. A 550 would be more useful but I'm less and less convinced by the E60 shape, although if a nice touring came up I'd consider it.

BMW 335i coupe- looks about right size/performance wise, not many in my price range and spec I like. Reliability seems a problem. I'd like an M3 but they're more than I want to spend at the moment and I keep considering a C63 as an interesting alternative.

Have browsed Merc V8 CLS's, similar to the 6 series but with four doors so slightly better practicality. Sat in one at the weekend, it was a diesel though, interior is nice although the steering wheel is notably off to one side (then sat in my car and noticed that's the same but maybe not quite so pronounced) Not sure on looks or reliability. I think I'd prefer a nice v8 C or E class coupe but the newer ones I like aren't in my price range.

Audi's, not remotely interested...

My original plan was to get a cheap run around and keep the roadster in a garage but I'm going off the idea of running two cars, the M would end up not getting used enough to justify that much money sat doing nothing for most of the year. I rarely bother with weekend hoons now, I like to get my enjoyment when the chance arises during normal usage.

Any experience with the above cars?
Any other options I should consider?

A classic dilemma.

I had a 335 for around 5 months. Lots of scare stories around reliability of the E90 version but if you ensure the turbo waste gates aren't rattling then you'll be fine and it's a hell of a lot of car for the money. I hear a 330d is pretty mappable-for-fun too.

What about the more robust 630i? Or a modern Alfa (Brera Prodrive's have always fascinated me). Merc C55 AMG?

Alfa :fuelfire:

You obviously forgot the Brera I had after my first Z4 3.0, I wanted rid after a month, finally sold it 6 months later. The most depreciation I've ever had on a vehicle, the most trouble too.

630i seems underpowered imo.

Diesel is just a flat out no, I hate the engine characteristics.

 Thats a no then!
Missed your Brera woes. What exactly was the problem so I don't make the same mistake one day.
Looks like it's BMW for you then Herminator.

Don't know what your budget is, but how about the new Alpina D3BT - rave reviews and 4.6sec 0-60 :D

Constant electrical problems with the Alfa. Just avoid, Italian rubbish.

Engines aren't a patch on BMW's offerings either, leagues behind on economy and refinement.
The Brera is too heavy and driving the wrong wheels, especially when you put any kind of power into them.

Sounds like you want a luxo barge. I'm afraid that most of the time the word "fun" does not get used when describing these cars. They are generally aimed at the people that will buy them.... and that's high earners in their late 40's/50's who want to cruise along the fast lane at 80mph with enough power under their right foot to leave anything in a cloud of dust.

Although there are the odd slightly unhinged vehicles. I remember another member here bought a VXR8. That ticks a fair few of your boxes but it's not exactly prestige and i can't say how reliable they are.

Thats the problem, I think I want a luxo barge and a Z4M, just can't justify both. or I want something in between.

Another putting me off a lot of BMWs is the Dakota leather, huge grain and a terrible plasticky fake leather feel.
Mercedes counter it with loads of grey leather, yuk

Alpina's Lavalina leather is as soft as the inner thigh of a.... (better stop there in case children read this)

If only it was a bit closer.

From 1st hand ownership experience, the Lavalina leather is indeed just as soft as my wife's......

Sadly, Lavalina is (understandably) rare on any existing ALPINA (mine is the only UK E92 with it) and it costs the price of a small hatch to spec on a new ALPINA. And new ALPINA's cost as much as a small house in some parts of the country

Methinks you need to get out there and try a few cars. Having considered a Merc before we bought wife's F21, it was noticeable that the dealership was full of couples 'of a certain age', and at 48, I wasn't nearly there yet  and as my wife is somewhat younger, she felt insulted when she was asked if the lolloping ride of the vehicle was to her comfort

Now, if that floats your boat, check this baby out http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201401020764805/sort/default/usedcars/postcode/sa460dy/radius/1501/make/bmw/keywords/b5/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/page/1/model/alpina?logcode=p

Stunning cars: just need to warranty the supercharger if it hasn't been updated. No plasticky leather in there, either. Seriously expensive when new, full of quality touches and comfort, an M5 beater in every respect and fast as f*k: a real sleeper. There are even a few tourers around.

Interesting suggestion on the Alpina. 500bhp sounds nice, but I already discounted the M5 for it's running costs surely the Alpina is pretty close.

Part of me wants to just sell the M and get a cheap practicle car, such as an old Audi A4 or A6 estate for around £3k and not have to worry too much about it. It's the sensible option for beefing up my house deposit.

Part of me hankers after another 840ci sport, I know the problems they can have, they aren't too bad and depreciation is non existant on them. They still have more class than most modern BM's IMO.

I also want to keep the M though, it's so precise and connected compared to any other car I've driven.

If only I had won the Euromillions last night, I'd be starting my own car collection.
