I disclosed the new car, just don't have to disclose the crash until renewal, should have made it more clear!

Absolutely not true. Insurance in the UK is a contract uberrimae fidei. A contract of the fullest disclosure

Which you haven't made and technically aren't insured.

I guess same principle with points etc - you are supposed to call them if you are blessed with a letter through the post!

I am on the existing policy I had with the insurer I was with at the time and they said I can continue without facing additional costs until renewal time, ie I don't need to disclose the accident as they held the policy and reactivated it.

Why would you disclose the accident when you remain with the same insurer that just paid out for that car? I would guess they already know about it ….

Completely correct Disca. I had an incident last November and whilst you have to inform insurer of points / mods / change of details (address, mileage, usage etc.), you have no obligation to disclose incidents until renewal. Quite clearly states so in the policy.

Update

1 week into waiting for a new log book for the 3.0si to arrive.

Have the E89 demo from the dealership until it does, sounds like it could be anywhere in the next 1-3 weeks.
