New Car Ordered... Few Questions to you E89 lot...

Hi,

So I have placed an order for my new car yesterday but have a few questions that I'm hoping someone can answer.

1) I have ordered the comfort pack. This includes "interior and exterior mirrors folding and auto dimming" Does this mean that the exterior mirrors fold electrically as I noticed that this is is seperate tick box on the options list but it does say that its not available as a seperate option in conjunction with auto dimming exterior mirrors? And secondly does the passenger mirror automatically dip to the kerb when enagaging reverse?

2) I have ordered the Professional loudspeaker system (the 14 speaker 650W option) Just wondered how this sounds. One dealership informed me that it's a Harmon Kardon system but it doesnt mention anything in the brochure about this. I am just hoping that it's a good clear crisp sound with good punchy bass. I have heard the DSP version in the E85. Is it equal to this or better, or worse?

3) Also the car comes standard with bluetooth preperation so I did not specify the connectivity package. Do you think that this is a worthwhile option, bearing in mind I probably wouldnt buy a snap in adaptor to charge the phone. Is it just voice control that you would get extra to what is already part of the bluetooth preperation?

1) I cant remember, but I think I had to select extra for the folding mirrors. Mine fold thats all I remember.

2) Its sounds awesome. I cant stop playing with it to figure out what the right volume settings are. Haven't heard it struggle yet when turning it up.
I keep all my music on a memory stick in the car. Plugs straight into the USB. It doesnt like some of the things I recorded from CD into WMA format but I think that might have been me recording it as variable bit rate. It copes quite happily from anything bought from Amazon. (Im not an apple person and the only I in the car is me.)

3) It works perfectly well for recieving calls. I dont have the satnav for the car so I am missing the navigation screen etc... So when I hit call it just seems to call my partner. As long as I can call her in doors thats the important thing. Not sure how to navigate it to call someone else, but that probably means I need to read the instruction manual again. It may just be an interaction with my phone as well. As to voice control I havent tried shouting names out in the car to find out.
 
1. The "interior and exterior mirrors folding and auto dimming" is the better of the two, as the wingmirrors dim, the rear view mirror dims, and the wingmirrors fold. The passenger side wingmirror will dip when selecting reverse (the adjust mirror switch has to be in the right position though..either left or right). The mirrors dont automatically fold when locking the car...you have to also press a button.

The other option is the same, except the wingmirrors dont dim. You can only have one of the two options.

2. Dont know.

3. No need to buy anything more unless you want to plug the phone in to charge, or you have sat nav and want some extra functions (like BMW Apps). Voice control is more money.
 
That's brilliant. Thanks for the clarification guys.. the comfort package is great value I think.. Nearly £2300 of toys for just under £1500. I would have specced them all seperately anyway I think :)

Looking forward to hearing and playing around with the sound system then Allattar :thumbsup:

I will give the Connectivity Package a miss then kevinmarkwhite :thumbsup:

BMW used to brand their best audio Harmon Kardon. They don't anymore. Guess they decided it wasn't worth paying for the license.


BMW contracts out with all sorts of companies to supply the actual parts. I have no idea what will be in your car. In other older BMWs I've seen parts from Clarion, Phillips and Visteon (Ford)
 
Yeah, the connectivity package adds the sat nav.

However, if there is something you are not sure of, best to ask your dealer, and if necessary add the extra option, cos missing something off now could be an issue later.

For instance, I've got sat nav on mine and know from prior experience to also get the BMW Apps to work, you need telephone usb interface etc. Miss that off the spec and I dont think it is easily retrofitable.
 
In the MINI they went form Harmon Kardon to a non branded system in the high end audio option but they have now gone back to Harmon Kardon. Wonder if that's the same with BMW?

My JCWS MINI (supercharged one) had the Harmon Kardon system. That was awesome!! It had a "MINI" setting in the settings menu where it had been set up for the acoustics of the MINI. That system used to blur the outside and interior rear veiw mirrors with bass!! :P
 
Hmmm.. Just been on the configurator and your right it adds the nav... The configurator really is confusing to say the least. BMW Connectivity package at £295 but will add in sat nav at £2225?? I will give that a big body swerve then. I was half tempted with the nav but really cannot justify the price of it when a tom tom is better when all said and done.

I may look at the portable BMW system in the future (the semi intergrated one) but not sure how this looks when installed.

Thanks Breaker, maybe they have reverted back to HK then? I have had a couple of Audi's with the BOSE sound system and they have always impressed on sound quality and clarity. If its the same as that or better then i will be a happy chappy :D
 
Yeah, the Pro sat nav isn't anywhere near as good as a TomTom. I've got the Pro Sat nav in my 1'er and have specced it on my Z4, but I admit it is a rip off.

I just like having everything built in, so no need to stick cradles or charging leads around. Over £2k for that luxury though, is excessive!

I did stop short of adding the TV function...even that was too much for me, even though it would be cool as hell!
 
Dont know if you have ever tried the CIC idrive in the current gen BMW's but it really is regarded the best integrated system on the market. I have used Idrive in all its different versions, mostly quite annoying tbh but the newest idrive is light-years ahead of anything else.

Worth £2225........no but if/when i order my Z4 i will spec it as i love using the system and the functionally it adds.

Anyone done a test drive in the 2.0 yet and got commets on the engine noise? This will be the first BMW ive owned and kinda worried im going to miss a straight 6 sound :oops: Drove a E93 330i a week or 2 back and i was :D :D :D with the top down and the sound!
 
I just looked at it as I already have a tom tom so in essence I don't need sat nav. I know its cool and I would have loved it just because of the intergrated look of it and the fact of I drive etc.

I almost specced it but I wanted to be below a certain figure PCM and to acheive that and have sat nav, I would have had to loose the Comfort Pack and probably the sound system and neither of them are an easy retrofit. Besides I will use those two options alot more than I will the sat nav. So for now at least I think I have made the right decision.. for me anyway :wink:

TV function will be cool but I have TV app on my iPhone so I suppose I could just watch that in the car if I really wanted to. :)
 
Its all about what is right for you, so no need to justify your choices to anyone. At the end of the day, all these things are just toys in my book...as long as its got 4 wheels etc...

The comfort pack is a good add, and quite practical.

Trouble speccing a car is all those boxes to tick....if my wife specced it, most would be empty!
 
No free BMW incentive then? On my E70 X5 I just ordered the media pack was "free" (i.e. £2400). As I have the rear and side cameras as well, you need it and it also allows the music handling as well as DAB radio and the iPod interface.

Not sure how it translates on the E89 though.

I do like the new BMW satnavs with Google view though, TomTom is nowhere near that and obviously the BMW system works in Citys and tunnels whilst the TomTom leaves you stranded. Each to their own of course.
 
Well apart from the fuel injector ticking when idling (see other thread) its a very meaty 4 pot sound.

With a very very satisfying turbo whine.
 
Personally, apart from not having full post code input, the sat nav is great and it looks amazing and finished the cabin off nicely. The 3D setting is great, as is the night setting. Playing DVDs is a bonus too. Bluetooth is great as you can play your iPhone music without having to connect it to the system with a wire either.

Professional hi fi is a great option, and 650 watts is more than I would ever need, and I like my music very loud and with a tight bass....

M mirrors dip down, but not far enough, I always have to push them down some more. Folding mirrors is always a good thing for me. But shame not worked by the key.

The BMW free incentive was zero customer deposit and almost £9k dealer contibution. I tried for the free nav aswell but only managed to get free heated steering wheel :wink:
 
The national advertised offer is free Sat Nav. Dealers are taking the cash from the offer and using it towards their deposit contribution.

Or to put it another way:

"There's no such thing as a free Sat Nav"
 
The "free sat nav" is just a name for the £2225 equipment contribution from BMW - it can be used for any equipment, or just as a discount, cos effectivelly, it is just another discount.

Now now theres no need for that Taz... :wink:

I am doing it to save money... The cost of the new car is being payed for through work via an allowance. The stipulation is that it has to be a new vehicle with service included :)
