Hi all!

Last Monday I travelled from Cardiff to Cambridge via Train to go view/buy the 2008 BMW 3.0 SI Sport Coupe... was quite the day.

As this is my first post I will try to make it look interesting and cover buying/ getting on with the car over the last week.

HISTORY

So I'm 21 and had my first BMW at 18 (not my first car), it was a 316ti Compact as that was the only car I could insure for under 3 grand, not a bad car apart from the massive lack of power.

**dont be confused by the picture, it was right hand drive, i've just flipped the picture**

After owning it for 18 months and adding 20k to the mileage it was subject to an engine fire caused by a headlight and sure enough the car was written off!

I then went out and bought a cheap runner (Mini Cooper 2004 1.6) which i've hated... ownership lasted 9 months and it's currently up for sale.

LAST WEEK

I spent a few days doing insurance quotes as I knew I wanted the Z4 coupe, most came back around 5/7 grand but then managed to find an insurer who would cover me full comp for £1400!

Found a car later that day on Autotrader (08 plate with 24k on the clock) for 13 grand.

Took me and a friend roughly 5 hours by numerous trains to get to Cambridge but when we arrived we were probably there not 30 minutes before the car was checked over and a deal was made!

It cost around £65.50 to fill the tank on v-power which gave me roughly 400 miles! The car to drive is a dream, the map settings are perfect and the engine pulls in every gear a treat, it almost
feels turbo charged. I would also like to say from pictures I was never impressed with the Z4 sport steering wheel.... I was very wrong.

NEXT DAY

I ordered these a few days before as I knew I would be getting a Z4 coupe and that springs were a common problem.

**After an exhausting day out I was woken by the doorbell... **

THIS WEEK

I've finally got around to cleaning her!

TODAY
Today I've noticed what sounded like a bracket rattling around under the drivers side rear wheel, got it up on a ramp and found the lower part of the rear spring had snapped off... shock... Luckily I have the replacement springs, car is booked in for Wednesday to have the new springs fitted all round, will also be having the alignment done.

Otherwise the car is perfect and is a MASSIVE head turner, have had nothing but attention since driving this around.....

That's it for now....

Great write up and great looking car. Had one myself before my current car and couldn't fault it one bit. Like you say a real head turner.

Best of luck with the car and hope you enjoy ownership as much as I did mine.

The springs are the start of the modding addiction, especially if you hang around here

Taz - Insurance was through Admiral and the option of paying monthly wasn't available, had to cough up the full amount in one. :(

Stuart - I don't understand what you mean by "tin opener pictures" but thank you....

JDM - Thanks! I think the car looks and sound great as standard, the only thing it lacks is stance, springs and 19" dishy RS-GTs should sort that however!

You have one of those Z4's that left the factory before they remembered to cut the excess metal off the top of it and fit a soft top as god intended :)

You might notice a little rivalry amongst the coupe and roadster clans on the forum. Whatever your faction you've bought a great car. Enjoy it and enjoy all the banter on this site which has to be the best car forum in the world

my lads insurance is due on 1st june, he is with admiral now and they appear to be the cheapest for next year too, only draw back is its a 1o month policy

Hi and welcome - nice write up and great looking car, and you've already started down the long never ending road of mods!

Stuart - Haha fair play that made me laugh, I've noticed the rivalry already..... should of seen it coming!

Taz - How old is he and whats he driving/paying currently, if you don't mind my asking? Insurance is quite a sensitive subject for me!!!

1st Car - Polo GTI - third party - £2200
2nd Car - BMW 316TI - fully comp - £1800
3rd Car - Mini Cooper - third party - £2400 <-- possibly due to the compact being written off
4th Car - BMW Z4 Coupe - fully comp - £1400

Colin - Thanks mate! Springs and Wheels ONLY........... for now :P

No way!!! I was looking at this on pistonheads not so long ago when I was looking to buy.. small world.

Definitely bookmarking that page however lol.

Craigza, ignore all the floppy top remarks, its jealousy cos your car is better looking :)

my lad is 21 in july, is current quote is just short of 900 for an 08 1.6 ford focus

when he took out his policy last year he did not realise it was 10 months, now he is finding that comparison sites will not allow he 4 ncb, admiral will cos of their 10 month policy

Welcome - great first post, hope your wallet has some depth left in it, as you've signed your life away joining up here :D

Carol M - Lol! thanks..........

Taz - Heh, I know i've done right, soft top is abbbbbbbbit too hairdressy for my liking and going from the mini I felt I had something to prove, the Coupe was the only choice for me. Your boy is the same age as me then, I turned 21 in March and my insurance dropped massively (at last). I didn't realise until recently Admiral offered 10 month policies, I've got a friend in the same situation with his NCB trying to insure a S3 but nobody will accept the NCB he's achieved with Admiral over the last 4 years.

Bing - Thanks mate! Being 21 and living with parents whilst working full time means I have plenty of depth to my wallet luckily.

Woah!! That's fighting talk is that! :hairdryer:

Welcome to the forum Craigza  Hope you're enjoying all the sunshine with your new zed...........oh, no wait........you bought the winter-only model :P

Welcome and nice car :D

So you bought the springs before you had the car? If so, top marks for enthusiasm

Did you have a good drive in one before that?

I try never to get involved in the Coupe V Roadster debate, but it is done in a good lighthearted way on here which is funny.

I like both but the Roadster experience is just sublime with the top down :P which edges it for me and I was never a fan of cars which look like a Ford Capri :fuelfire: (damn, I joined in after all)
