How about a VW Polo GTI. Thats what we have for the wife, Ours is a 2015 and has the 1.8 turbo engine and is 192bhp and a cracking little car thats well worth a look
+1. My wife has a 2016 model which she has had from nearly new and absolutely adores it. Great fun to drive, fantastic spec (sat nav, reversing camera, heated seats etc) and pretty cheap to run.
Yeah we have had ours for 5 years now and can't fault it even if ours is the pov spec without what yours has in it. had 5k on it when we got it and has 31k now

Can anyone think of any alternatives?

I believe you can get mail order wives these days, no idea on warranty or return policy and certainly doubt you would get one under 4 years old tbh.
Changing the car to something like an Aston Martin would be a lot cheaper than changing a wife.

I would love an I8 but as my good lady cannot get in and out of one, I estimate buying an i8 would cost at least the house plus an arm and a leg.

And then you wouldn't be able to get in or out of one either

How about a 308 Gti 270 - very subtle but also very under rated
I have looked at those but they are over budget for a decent one. I will look at the 208 though. Not 100% on another French car. Have had a couple and reliability (mainly electrical) were not the best.
Merc E class is too big, apparently. It must be a hatchback aswell.

how about this one - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203751378125?hash=item2f70874ccd:g:73AAAOSwZp1hqHBA

Maybe £1k over budget but a bit of negotiating and it may be a little closer and much rarer than a Focus or Golf

I agree it's more interesting than a focus or golf. I will have to see what 'er in doors thinks.

Polo doesn't have half the kit (no pdc or sat nav), although I like the idea. Golf spec would be crap too for the budget and a 1.0l engine (same as in the Octavia which is not the most exciting or powerful), or the 1.5l at a push.
I don't like modern Minis; sorry.
She really needs something Focus/ Golf size or bigger (not too big though) as it will be the main family car (the E92 is OK but not the most practical space and obviously the E89 is useless for most things).
She doesn't like SUVs or MPVs (nor do I).
Maybe because of the rise in prices this year, but it seems that pretty much everything of a similar type, age and mileage is the same price! :o
Never thought I'd be OK with paying £15k for a four year old Focus.
I am interested in a Mazda3 sport Nav, as I have had two Mazda6s and they were great everyday motors.
Something like this is top of the list ATM

As I mentioned in my post my wife's Polo GTI has reversing camera, PDC, sat nav etc

Yes I saw that, thanks. Struggling to find one with these that's anywhere near my budget.

What about a Merc B class. Admittedly not the prettiest of cars but they are like a tardis and feel very spacious and supremely well built inside.. I bummed a lift once in my next door neighbours and was really impressed.. 15k could get you a nice well specced low miler too https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-Benz-B180-1-5d-108bhp-2018MY-SE-/324957191198?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0

Well the Peugeot GTi is out of the equation. Turns out they have Alcon 2 piece brakes on the front, only available from dealers. £1,800 a pair. I don't think so :o There are kits to change them starting at £1,500. That's a no aswell.

Some friends of ours had one. They had nothing but trouble with it and sold it for pennies. These things put you off a bit.

I guess it would, next door have had theirs for 4 years, used daily and never had any problems, I think your Mazda 3 is a good shout though, I love the reliability and build quality of Japanese cars and the mazda 3 is quite a nice looking wee motor, you also tend to get more bang for your buck with the Japanese marques

If you can stretch to £16 - 17k you can just about get a five door 120i that (I think) meets your requirements. Prices of used cars are still very strong it seems.

Those smaller diesel engines in Mercedes are actually Renault / Peugeot engines (can't remember which!).

Fcuk.. that would put me off buying one actually

It gets worse!

Between 2011 and 2015 four-cylinder 1 Series used the Prince engine developed jointly by BMW and Peugeot-Citroen.

And half of the diesel engines in the last 30 years were made by Isuzu.

And Ford's Ecoboost engines are based on Mazda L blocks.

Still at least Mini, MG and Jaguar are still British
