im not happy with the z4 factory media receiver for its looks and cave-man features. i cant listen to my iphone music through the factory built receiver.
i saw this on sale on ebay.

is there any reason it would not work on the z4 ?
is there any recommended media receiver for a z4 based on your experince ? i have an iphone 3gs if it matter.

p.s : whats the best way to spend money on your car interior ?

If you have sat nav/ screen I believe the screen is powered by the headunit. so won't work there

Do you have dsp? If you do that new headunit probably won't work with the digital amp. If you don't have dsp (top stereo) you should be fine.

Also do you want your iPhone sitting out of the dash like that?

i dont have a navigation system in there.
my interior is casual, like this one http://www.velocityjournal.com/images/full/2003/s2003010901/bm2003z46005.jpg
i dunno what a dps is anyway :P and the iphone looks secured in its spot ? no ?
whats your recommendation for a stereo player

any aftermarket head unit will look crap in the z4 cos of the dashboard shape, the fitting kits from autoleads etc dont curve the same way and are tricky to fit,its a big shame BMW didnt offer better head units instead of just giving speaker options.

Not sure I'd want my iPod/iPhone perched on a dock that like that, also looks a bit clunky.
You have a couple of options the most being the Aux in which countless members on here have done, just means you can't control the device from the HU.
I went for an Alpine iDA X-305 (couple of years old now so newer versions must available), USB port in the back of it lead into the glovebox and full control of the device via the control wheel on the HU, I have since added a 2nd box which allows me to change tracks and volume from the MFSW and more recently the Alpine BT unit, there is small LCD display that shows the album artwork off the device and also your contacts, dialled list etc.
A couple of images to show how it looks / fits.

looks so much nicer.
how much did it cost you and time it took you to install it if you did it yourself.
do you have an iphone/iphone connection in there somewhere ?

If memory serves it was about £300 2 to 3 years ago. This is the current version of it http://www.alpine-usa.com/product/view/ida-x305s It's really easy to install and I did it myself in about 1 hour, I purchased an ISO to BMW conversion loom which negates the need to cut any wires and lets you return to stock at a later date without issue. As I said there is a USB socket on the back of the unit and it's supplied with a lead which easily reaches the glovebox and I have my iPod connected that way, it is then controlled from the large central wheel with all iPod menus displayed on the screen.
I then fitted a unit that allows limited MFSW control from a UK company called Incartec. http://www.incartec.co.uk/bmw/1442/brand/device/radio/Browser.aspx I'm guessing there must be a US equivalent.
And most recently I have fitted the Alpine KCE400BT unit http://www.alpine-usa.com/product/view/kce-400bt again this plugs into the existing wiring so need to cut anything, once your iPhone is paired with it, your contacts lists, dialled lists, recieved calls etc are displayed on the screen and accessed by scrolling through them using the control wheel, it is also possible to stream music from your phone to the HU via it.
Overall I'm really impressed with how it all works and how easy it is to fit an aftermarket HU etc, these days.
The worst part was fitting the adapter plate it took a few attempts to realise it was in 2 parts :headbang:

Richard your adapter plate looks so much better than the autoleads one I was supplied with, any idea of the make and where you had it from would like mine to look that good too.

Once again I thankyou.
This is not the exact one I used as I have no recollection of who made it, I remember it came from A1 motorspares but they no longer seem to show it on their website.
It is in 2 parts you fix the actual mounting to the car using the OEM screws then once the HU and vents are in place you you fix the cover over the top.
The Autoleads one I have seen on the web appears to be only 1 piece is that right?

It might possibly be a company called "in connect" or something similar. I have the same one in my car. I also have a grey version going spare if it would do anyone.
