New Brakes are squealing!

About one week ago, I took the Zed in (2003 3.0i sport pkg) for the 60,000 mile service. While there they replace all for brakes since the were well wore down. However, now the brakes squeak. :headbang: Granted, it has been ~30F degrees here, but I've never had a car that squeaked in cold temps. Even the wore down brakes didn't squeak. Is that normal for new brakes to squeak in the cold temps? Or did they use cheap pads or not properly clean and prep for installation? Also, is it normal for new brakes to have a lot of brake dust?

Thanks for the help!

Lots of brake dust could mean cheap brake pads. Performace brake pads can squeak.

Who did the brakes and did they replace the disks aswell as it could be the new pads bedding into the worn disk.

They only replaced the pads this time. It was a local indy shop that does BMWs. The work order says ceramic pads and thats it. Are ceramic pads generally performance pads?
I'll give them a call tomorrow when they open to see what brand they use.

Ceramic pads could mean anything, i always supply my own as i know some garages will use the cheapest on the market.

Do your disks have a slight lip and rust at the edge? Its usually new pads rubbing on this that causes the sqeek.

Also perform the Zeckhausen brake in bedding procedure as described on www.zeckhausen.com

Hi Sonny.

My bet is that they did not clean the caliper properly or use any anti sqeal compound/copper grease. I would take it back and ask them to clean the calipers and use some anti squeal compound on them. The dust is normal for numerous types of pads.

Regards Zed.

un1leash: Theres no lip or rust on the calipers that I can see. I'll check again later in better light though.

I think they may have used Bosch or some random brand at O'Reilly's Auto Parts here in OKC.

PVR: Thanks for the link! After school, Im going to go do that. Hopefully it will solve some of the problem.

And Finally...Zedrider: I'll call them and ask if they did that when I call and ask the brand of the pads.

thanks again for everyones advice! Hopefully this gets sorted, cause Im kinda dissapointed in the new brakes.

On a smaller note: my music teacher used to work on cars on the side when he was active duty. Are the brakes on the Zed difficult to replace? Or is that just the common stereotype since it's a BMW?

EDIT: Just got off the phone with them. They used ATM ceramic in the front and Adaptive One Ceramic in the rear. Never heard of either....

They used ATM ceramic in the front and Adaptive One Ceramic in the rear

ATM ceramic:
http://yotatech.com/f116/napa-atm-brand-144298/ (its the only thing on the web I could find about them)

Adaptive One ceramic:
http://www.adaptiveone.com/ao_inside.html

Any thoughts on these? Was I given brakes not suited for a car like the zed?

Kinda wish I had waited and got EBC green stuff or something better! :)

Appreciate all the help!

Sorry I can't help with the rest, (haven't heard of those pads myself) but no the brakes on the Zed are easy to replace. I've not compared the Z4 to any other brake system on a BMW (only other experience is Chevy) but they were pretty much the same. Caliper guide bolts and the caliper slides off and pads come out. Just need a c clamp to push the piston back in. Note - that is a very shortened how-to on brakes, follow a guide before you follow what I just typed.
