New brake caliper?

Hi,

Posted in the problems forum (http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13487&start=0) about DSC warning lights on the dash, it appears I have a binding caliper which, when described to BMW service, is probably causing the wheel speed sensor to get 'confused' and throw up the warning lights. There's lots of dust no on the front offside wheel and the disk is burning hot. I'm going to try and free up the caliper but have been told to just replace or suck and see with new pads (obviously this involves pushing the piston back). Pads have a fair amount of material left though the wheel in question appears lower.

OK, the worst news is the wheel sensor may be away also, even worse the control servo unit, either way I'm looking at £££££££££'s :(

Any thoughts guys?

Well I'd forget the over the phone diagnosis from BMW service, as they just make it up as they go along.... however dust and burning disk would indicate a sticking caliper. Frankly I'd not drive it at all until fixed else you'll need new disks if you don't crash it.

Freeing calipers rarely works for more than a few miles. They either then leak or stick again.
If it were my Zed I'd put a pair of recon calipers on and see how it goes. You can get away with one but on 155 mph cars I prefer things in balance.

If there are more problems then new disks and pads are the order of the day. Sensor is a cheap plug in part on one front wheel (and a rear) only.

Good time to upgrade to E46 330 discs calipers, carriers and pads and vastly improve your braking, since it sounds like you'll be spending money anyway

That's if you can find some, the breakers etc. seemed to twig what was going on earlier in the year and prices have trebled since then.

For sure they may be a little less common now, so you have to be creative to find them, not the big internet based breakers

The carriers are virtually free as never break, so are left on scrappers. Calipers can be obtained refurbed and of course discs and pads are just consumables
