New BMW's getting stolen using blank keys

I don't want to cause any undue alarm, but have any of you seen the post regarding this on Pistonheads below:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=72&t=1121571&mid=54115&i=0&nmt=New+BMW%27s+getting+stolen+using+blank+BMW+keys&mid=54115

It states it refers to 1 Series and 3 Series, but doesn't the E89 have the same key as these? I know the one we test drove had the same key as my 58 plate 1 Series.

Hopefully it won't apply, but keep your Zed's as safe as possible!

It applies to us unfortunately. It appears to be any BMW that uses the key slot with a possible exception of the Fxx's

1,3,5 and X5's are popular cars and therefore most targetted. We might get lucky as Z4 is a niche market. I wish I had kept 2.0i on my car now in case they think its more powerful than it is!

nah, the more powerful zeds have the twin single exit exhausts so they wont nick it unless they are complete mongs

If you own anything that is nice, there is always going to be a risk of it getting stolen. If someone wants it, they will take it.

Reading that thread, it seems one way to cut some of these thefts out is to just visually check your car has locked when you press the button. I often get OCD about that anyway, so I'd know instantly if the keyfob wasn't doing anything due to signal jamming.

However, can't stop them towing it away I guess!

One great thing about having the SmartTop module, I programmed it to fold the mirrors when I lock the doors and the mechanism that folds the mirrors are pretty loud too so there is no mistaking it. When I look back and see that the mirrors aren't folded, then it's a sure sign that the car is unlocked.

A good reason to keep my BMW assist contract up to date as one call to them and they'll tell me exactly where it is via the cars gps!

Trouble is, if my car got nicked, I'm not sure I would want it back - you don't know what the thieving scum have done to it mechanically, and it wouldn't be the same knowing some toe-rag has stolen it. Obviously, thats not how the insurance would see it!

Most nights my cars blocked in on the drive and is parked outside my office window at work, so should be ok there...just can't take it anywhere else lol

My car has a vivaro and and old Suzuki vitara behind it. And also secure private gates with keypad or remote access, and pressure pads in drive linked to 6 CCTV cameras that are also motion sensitive and send emails of photos to myself and wife's phone and video footage to my laptop of footage 3 mins after camera triggered too. Also linked into house alarm that also sends voice mail and email of zones breached and contacts the monitoring station that phone plod if no answer to ourselves in event of alarm(done on landline and remotely in case someone cuts phone line b4 breaking in)
Lot of bother but we stay in the middle of nowhere and were broken into just after we moved in.
Ps did I mention the 2 german short haired Labrador retrievers?
Noisy but in outside kennels so actually couldn't attack you if you broke in :poke:
