New battery

Had to put a new battery in the M, had to jump it twice recently and the second jump was away from home so had a AA fella do it.
He checked the charge from alternator which was good but the battery was below output and therefore wouldnt hold a recharge. I reckon it's 5yrs on this battery which is ok for a weekend runner.

Gone with Bosch s5 agm battery so hoping that can get an equally decent life, easy swap over using bike spanners to get at the small bolts and it fired up cleanly :)

Sounds like it did good if sat up for 5 days on the trot. Would be interested to know how the AGMs hold up, I couldn't justify double the price on a daily.

The agm was £130inc delivery, so yes a bit more than non agm, but wanted give the Bosch one a go.

The outgoing one was a Europarts replacement which I think @ roughly £60 back then actually did good for the price:

Spooky as bmw diagnosed my what turns out to be a faulty dsc sensor to be a fubared battery
So yup I replaced the battery, so I now have my oem bmw agm battery which has since been tested and it's all good
So I'll be sticking that in for sale
But yeah not cheap the agm puppies think £145 from bmw and that's my discounted price too

So interested to see you swapped yours out too

Didn't think it was worth paying more for AGM in these cars. They are aimed more at start stop tech cars I thought.

Yep total waste of time putting agm batteries in these cars, as you say they are for start stop function cars.
Sounds like the usual knowledgeable BMW dealer!

I believe AGMs are lighter, if that's an aim and hold up to discharge better. If so they may be better for infrequently used cars.

I think one of their disadvantages is that it is more critical that they are kept in a charged state than flooded normal batteries, so unless you're leaving it on a trickle (specific for agm batteries) I would be less inclined to use them in infrequently used cars.

From what I had researched, the main message I got was that the gel mat technology improved the recharge/discharge irrespective of whether used in stop/start cars or not, only time will tell for sure.

I had to carry them 3 flights of tenement stairs they're both bloody heavy :P

they are identical in dimensions but the Bosch battery has sightly higher ampage rating or capacity

I've got that Bosch on mine, or it maybe an S6 :? Actually I'm sure it's the S6, don't really know what the difference is tbh, got it from ECP too

Bosch and bmw one that was in mine are both identical in type etc as per pic of mine I've taken out and replaced

Interesting, my oem battery was white. It began to lose charge so I replaced it with a Bosch s5, much more cold crank power than oem.
I was also told agm batteries are for stop start cars so didn't get one.

The s6 was a larger battery 300+ mms length, while the s5 was 278mm.

Also have the s6 when I replaced mine about 3 years ago; excellent battery - even though mine's not an ///M its pretty thirsty for electrons

The black OE battery is AGM. ///M comes standard with an AGM battery - at least those in North America did. But since all Zs were built at the same plant, in South Carolina, I'm sure (99.99%) that all ///M's should have AGMs fitted as standard.

Mine is black and BMW branded - i need to faff and get back into the boot to confirm the specs. Will go and buy a new one on Weds, probably with the intention of upgrading to the larger size for longevity.

Can't seem to see any AGM Bosch ones on http://www.eurocarparts.com/car-battery though :/
