Ok so the last few days the car has struggled to start with the battery light flashing. Assume that I need a new one. Which one should i get?

Bucket load of Duracell AAs and some duck tape.

in serious mode tho, I believe the preferred choice is the Bosch S3?

Isn't the S3 for the small cars? wouldn't you need a S4 or S5?
They do give you a little more power as you go up the range (about 10% per level), but the S3/4/5 numbering are really about many years warranty you're getting - i.e. the S3 has a 3 year warranty , 4 years on S4, 5 on S5.

What's more important is getting the right model for your car, as the 027 S5 is a 63ah/610cca battery, whereas the 096 S5 is a 77ah/780cca battery (OE spec is 70/700 IIRC).

The closest Bosch to OE spec is the 096 S3 which is about 20% cheaper than the S5 - but of course only comes with a 3 year (vs 5 year) warranty.

How interesting. Bosch's website claim s3 is for smaller or older cars? and they do give the impression there is more difference than just capacity. I wonder if it is all marketing? I know when I thought I was going to need a new battery I was thinking I would want at least an s4... Interesting

I have an old VW Caravelle ('98) and put a Bosch S5 on it last year, never been let down by it and the van stands still for weeks at a time. Very impressed with it and got it from Halfords. You can put your car registration in on their website and it will give you battery recommendations:

Well turns out it's the alternator! Car won't start at all now and just clicks. Ffs!

Just for the record. Check the size of the battery. I was going to get an 096 but then realised the direct replacement size wise was the 110.

if this is still an issue, I've got two spare alternators....

Is your car a manual? i guess its too late now, but you could try to push start it.

I pushed mine around for 2 weeks waiting for my part to show up. Parking gets really tricky in some areas.
