New Battery query!

Hi folks,

I’m looking to establish what type of battery I need for my recently acquired 2010 s23i auto E89.

When I put my reg in, the options come back as an AGM battery suitable for stop start.

Now, my car does not have stop start and it does not say AGM on what looks like the original BMW battery. It also looks like there is a vent hose attached.

Could someone please help me confirm which battery I need? There is just so much conflicting info online.

Thanks very much in advance.

BMW specify AGM batteries but you don't 'need' an AGM. It just stands for Absorbent Glass Mat, which gives a higher storage capacity for a given physical size.
Don't worry about whether they say 'suitable for start-stop' or not. Most new batteries will say they are as most newer cars have start-stop.

The two important criteria are it's physical size (so it fits in the hole and the clamps can be used) and the amperage. Just find one that is at least as high an amperage as the old one (in your case 70 amps).

And make sure it is registered to the car once installed and coded if a different capacity.

Varta and Bosch are popular makes, but I have a cheap spare Napa one in my garage that loses about 0.1 volt every three months, so is as good as they get.

Hi, thanks for replying.

The only reason I’m trying myself in knots about this is I took it to my local garage for something else, and asked if they could order a new battery for me.

The mechanic called his suppliers, and gave the reg number of the car, then asked if it was start stop (which it isn’t).

I’m just concerned that it’s a non AGM that’s been ordered on this basis.

However, he did give the specs of the battery, so I’m guessing as long as those specs match then I’m good?

Also, I take it the garage will now about registration and will have necessary equipment. Or should I highlight this?

What a palaver for a battery!😄

I would just remind the garage that it will need registering. They should have the necessary scanner/ equipment to do that.
