New battery fitted and registered.

Hi all,
I know there are a fair few battery posts on here, but wanted to add my twopenneth worth as Ive just updated mine.

The car is 4.5 years old and Ive had a few issues pointing to the battery. I think the previous owner maybe used the stop/start a lot.

Anyway, after looking around, I found that replacing with the same stop/start AGM 70Ah battery severely limits choice. Best deal I could find was around £125 delivered. So I did some checking and found that the z89 battery bay has a pre drilled hole for securing a larger battery.

Therefore, I found myself an 80Ah stop/start AGM battery of the same width/height but 4cm longer. This fits perfectly in the point for the securing bracket on longer batteries. Best of all, this battery has more power, better cold cracking amps and was much cheaper.....£80 delivered but ebay did a 20% off deal so I got it for £70 delivered and it has the same 3 year guarantee as the £125 one.

I have Carly and apart from an initial glitch due to their software update (which was fixed with a software update within 24hrs)....I have reset the car to handle an 80Ah AGM battery and registered it to the car.....so simple and took 2 minites.

All in all, happy with the deal and hopefully no more small glitches due to the old battery failing! Delighted I didnt have to go to BMW to get this done....Ive paid off my mortgage and dont want another.....

Good news on the battery front, first thing I did with Carly was to enable memory of last state for the stop/start function as I don’t think it does the car much good

Agreed mate,
Did the same with mine. Stop/start is off with a bit of black tape over the light!

Ive coded it off on just about every car Ive owned, its a damn pain!

That's great news OP!

Before I bought a Z4 I had a BMW 123d with stop/start. The battery lasted 4 and a half years, and being an AGM one the replacement cost £250 by the time it was fitted and coded!

Then at 6 and a half years the starter motor needed to be replaced - I got a £600 bill for that! :evil:

You can probably tell I'm not a fan of stop/start! :lol:

Ive never thought it was a good idea and, being in NE Scotland, I dont come across many traffic jams, so its near useless to me.
Like I say, I code it off whenever possible!

Can you give us the reference for the larger battery, and the eBay link would be good. I think mine is on the way out judging by the ever shorter intervals between charging.

Anyone know how to register it with BMW INPA?

What engine is your Z (not sure if that makes a difference in the available space for the battery due to equipment etc?). Mine is a 35i.

So its 315mm long vs the original 278mm (+37mm) - Good to know that will fit in our cars to give us the extra capacity over the stock battery (80Ah vs 70Ah, and 800 CCA vs 760CCA. That cross references with the Varta Silver Dynamic AGM 580 901 080 Short Code: F21 UK Code: 115AGM.

Don't recognise the brand in your eBay link (anyone know what it is, and if they are any good?) but at £79 + £7.50 shipping its tempting vs the same Varta at £150 + £8.50 shipping from Tanya batteries. The Varta says 3 times the life to resist deep discharges, which is good for those of us who don't use our Z' as a daily drive, particularly in winter.

Mines a 20i.
I did look at more expensive brands and for the cost, considering this one has a 3 year guarantee, I thought Id go for it.
TBH I think there are only a few companies that make car batteries and then they get branded accordingly. If you look at the case mouldings, carry handles etc, there are very few differences.

I guess I will probably be onto a newer Z in 3 years time so it makes sense to save money now. I had the same attitude with my previous Z. I recommended ebay LED DRL bulbs for £20 as opposed to the £140+ for premium brands. Many owners on here have gone for the ebay specials and been delighted with them.

Horses for courses I suppose, but for me, getting a bigger capacity/output battery for nearly half the price of a branded one but with the same guarantee.....Im happy to give it a go!

Hi mate.....Carly will cost you £50 for the adapter, £40 for the pro app and then £10 to enable battery registration.
So for a £100 outlay you get a device that will do so much.
It can be used to code various things, clear faults, monitor systems, force dpf regions, reset service indicators, etc, etc.
I know £100 is a bit of an outlay but if it saves you one visit to a stealership, it has paid for itself!

Best of all, it works on pretty much all BMWs. I used it for forcing DPF regens on my X3....its fantastic to be able to do that at your leisure!
