New battery, but no Nav, date or TMC - help!

Treated the car to a new battery this week, as it still had the original from 2004 and wasn't happy about starting in the cold weather.

Nav map hadn't been showing for a week or so, but I put that down to feeble battery, and thought it would be fine when the new one had been fitted.

But nope.

Getting this screen now...

...I upgraded the unit to V32 in March and am using a genuine 2009 map disc.

When I try the 2004 disc that came with the car, I get the same message.

And when I insert the V32 disc, same again :(

Also, the date doesn't appear and TMC just shows in red.

And I am listening to Classic FM

Any ideas boys and girls?

Looks like the drive has an issue. The date comes from the setup though so that should still be able to be done via that.

Have the battery unplugged at the moment, hoping that leaving it for 15 mins might cure it.

But nope :(

And I saw the date setup on the menu - oops!

Be careful with the disc cleaners, they can damage the disc beyond repair (I'm talking about the polishers here) Double check the disc itself doesn't have condensation marks on it. My Ford system was acting up in the cold, and I thought I might be looking at a very expensive head unit but when I ejected the disc it was covered in what looked like water droplet marks which simply wiped off and it's been fine since.

Whatever you do, do not put one of those laser cleaning discs with a brush on it in the drive, they are well known for demolishing the internals. Worst case you're looking at a failing laser and there are kits available to replace those if you're confident with a soldering iron.

As he tried two discs, my money is on the laser and I would indeed order a new one of those instead.

You'd have just as much luck (and safer) using an air duster designed for electronics (guaranteed not to piss propellent all over the show).

The laser diodes do wear out and aren't difficult to replace, but I believe getting the drive out of the car is a total PITA.

Might be a longshot....

But did this happen after you fitted the new battery?

Might be the voltage from the battery? Some batteries are not compatible with the Z.

It was playing up before I fitted the battery :(

I'll attack it with a can of compressed air before I shove in the disc - good plan
