Interesting that they aren't taking the M5 on with a saloon.
An ego stroker for high earning dads the length of the country! Love them. 8)
The appeal? Jack of all trades really, and if you can afford to spank all that money at the pumps for the inevitable short trips it will mainly get used for then lucky you. Its excess, Brietling wearing North face coat types will love this.
The bobbly seats look nice, a bit like the wooden ball seat covers you see elderly cab drivers using!

The Audi looks fantastic and will go even better but I thought a piece Tom Ford did years ago for the last M5 touring summed the problem with these cars up - he drove an M5 touring directly from UK to Valencia to meet the BMW Oracle Americas Cup team. at the end as an aside he mentioned that he thought he'd have been their quicker in a 530d touring as the range was so much greater reducing pit stops.
If it was my money I'd take the slow road in the Rangie .

I always think what my dad used to say when i used to rave about evos and scoobys years ago, and that was "would you still like it if it had a 1.0 engine?" I know exactly what he meant by it because what i loved about them is the whole package, the speed, the 4wd computer guided handling, the agressiveness etc but when you look at them they are just 4 door angular saloon cars with big spoilers!
Its got enormous front scoops, huge rear valance, 5000 LEDS per 1cm2 front lights etc and it has 552bhp and does 0-60 in 3.9 secs, but transplant a 1.9tdi into it and it still as appealing?

That ^^^^^ is a very good point, I will be sure to tell one of my best mates who is on the brink of buying an Evo 9 for £12k just the above!
Thats why I like the MC, because it does go fast but realistically that can't be used/enjoyed on the road alot of the time, and I'm not one to track a car. So thats why I like the other benefit of it looking good!

I don't get what point you/your dad are making here. Are you saying that if it was all show and no go would it still be appealing? I guess, at a price it would be in the same way that plenty of people buy 318 M sports and stick M badges on them.
Aggressive looking cars with pea shooter power outputs are clown cars in my opinion. It's not that they don't look good, it's just that they don't go good and as a petrol head, that's what matters.
It will probably be like most Audi's - good in a straight line but dull beyond belief anywhere else.
Looks like Audi and BMW have decided not to tread on each others path here - Audi does the hyper estate and BMW forgets about an M5 touring and Audi decides not to bother with a saloon and let's BMW have that market.

IMO either an e46 or e90 318 m sport is a relatively slow car in comparison to its larger engined brothers, but to me they are a lovely, subtle looking car and still as desirable as say a 335i.
