Now updated my iPhone to iOS 5.1 and it is now fully synced with the car. Previously if I connected it via the USB port then the iPod element would work but not the phone. Following the new software update both elements work, bonus.
 
It's using the BMW USB sync with a standard apple cable. I'm using this in my 3 series but later model Z4's will have the same feature
