New AP bbk kit - man mathable maybe for some

Despite Andre's very nice 3d printed cooling kit I was still able to crack a pair of my Peformance Friction discs for my ever trusty AP 5575 kit I have had for some years now (I had found over the years PF were better than AP for cracking, similar price). Whilst braking performance was (almost) never in doubt, replacing discs at £600 a pair more than once a year was wearing (boom) a little thin... this is a 356x32mm disc so considerably bigger than stock

I'd heard of the new generation AP calipers being used in e46m3s, and what really sold the idea to move from the old 5575 caliper to the the new 9660 was the ability to run ex BTCC discs (& pads which I was already using with the 5575 as they fit kinda). After each race in btccc the teams are obliged to junk their discs and pads used for perhaps all of one round, which means a nice supply of very expensive consumables at at very low price (Try £80 for discs instead of £800!). :) 368x36mm

Knowing that the Z4M 5575 AP kit is slightly different in the offset of the bell and bracket to the e46m3 kit I was unsure as to whether the 46m3 kit would fit correctly. Consensus from the designer of the brackets & bells was that it would be fine, I wasn't convinced but went ahead anyway. Turns out they fit perfectly and actually required zero shimming as opposed to the 5575 Z4M kit which did require a tiny bit. Happy days.
Caliper design has moved on a bit in 15 years, these things are pretty sexual (to these eyes!).

Super happy with it (been running it since late last year), if anything I've always found the z4m specific front & rear kit to be slightly too rear biased, I don't have that feeling now.
Yes it's quite an expensive up front cost (you won't see much change from 2.5k all in) and probably overkill for most of you but if you do track the car a lot my maths says the ex btcc consumables make it a pretty good option.
Hopefully someone finds this useful, if you want to know more about the kit drop me a pm.

car still not gone in for paint so excuse the new primer bumper, not a two tone kind of guy!
As such need to decide to whether to paint the rear caliper lettering white or the fronts yellow to match :scratchhead:

Looks ace Tom! Do you have any idea why you struggled so badly with cracked discs on the 5575 kit? I've got the same front and rear, and I know what you mean about the rear bias... It always feels a little 'edgy' getting hard on the brakes!

You mentioned the btcc pads 'kinda' fit - were there any fitting issues? I was looking into this as a solution for cheaper pads for mine when I ever get the bloody thing back!

You'll just have to brake less :poke:

I really like AP stuff, and it's got nothing to do with working for them in their Speke factory in the early 90s (we made plane & tank stuff) :P

I like the way they've managed to retain the simple pins out, pads in function whilst also adding a bridge over the top.

Used to really hate having to take the whole caliper off on standard calipers when I wanted to change pads during a track day. My Corrado VR6 was upgraded to AP back in the day, and the standard calipers on the later e34 M5 had the same pad replacement method, so I was really disappointed when I found out the crap they'd put on the Z4M.

My plans involve a custom kit from Alcon/Reyland to use the Ferarri 355 Challenge calipers and 356x32mm floating discs...but as with the rest of the car, I'll probably never see it until COVID has been eradicated :P

I'm okay with the Porsche Brembos and B16 suspension for now as I don't do anywhere near as many track days as I used to - but I really want the Alcons because I've already paid for them :x

It's just heat management (or lack of), I don't think I'm that unique to be honest, it's not uncommon on those size discs.

Depends how worn the set you get is, the 5575 takes a 17mm pad iirc, you may or may not need to reduce the thickness. I think the one's I had off malc in the past were fine just about. Bare in mind they come with the pad retaining tabs taken off so there can be some pad rattle.

I try! 36mm seem man enough for the task so far though.

Sounds good although I won't ever be buying reyland discs again, there was a reason why they were half the price of AP/PF discs.
Hope you get it all back soon anyhow!

Very nice - those calipers look like the product of finite element analysis. So lean! Fascinating bit of info re BTCC discs too.

Yellow lettering gets my vote. :)

I’ve had to make do with the cast offs.....

Those are a huge step up, man maths at its best.

Don't feel so bad, if you don't drive like a bit of an idiot on the track all the time like I do then you've got the better package.
They stop just as well and due to the difference in size of the disc overall weigh a kilo or two less if I remember rightly.
Yes it does annoy me

They look fantastic, I’d love these!
I’m not sure how you cracked discs with your original AP set up. I brake far too late on track and I’ve used mine in 35C on short tracks without evidence of overheating....at least so far. I look forward to trying to replace the discs for as little as £600 here in the land where anything European carries a 50% markup!

Very nice Tom!

I had the same issue on my e46, I kept cracking AP discs, didn't try PF discs though.... The worst discs were the Reyland ones! 3 days they lasted!

I did read somewhere that they are going to stop selling the old btcc discs?

Interesting reading. I run CP5555 calipers on my evo VII, It would just destroy the AP discs. I also move to Performance Friction discs & plenty of cooling. They are so much better, only get hairline surface cracks now.

Try some caliper temperature paint, to see what temps your getting.

My Evo cooling was via shaped scoops bolted to the bottom wish bone, picking up the drop link bolts, works a treat as the full caliper gets the fresh air.

Got any pics of that?

Sounds similar to a 996 GT3 setup? Have a good Vanne, sure you could tweak them to fit a zed
